Okay so it's pretty much confirmed that we need dungeon masters to train Exotics?

And yes, there is a difference between train war and train hunting. Thus the bats being only hunting-trainable.

I knew there was a difference, the issue was that I didn't know bears are hunting trainable(turns out they are) so trying to use that to train a few dogs before training everything else for war didn't help.  I'm guessing anything that can be trained for war can be trained for hunting?

Correct. I'm wondering if it's possible for something to be only War trainable, but I don't know if [training_War] is an actual tag.

I didn't have a dungeon master in my first DF2010 fort, but I still saw "An animal has become a war Giant Tiger."

I know you dont need DM's to tame elephants at least, though I never got enough tamed to turn them into war elephants.  If I had well...woe be unto thee!

While we're on the topic of trainable animals and war animals, I remember it being mentioned at least once that animals might be rideable in the future.  That hasn't happened yet right?  Or is there an incredibly awesome command somewhere that I'm missing?  Or is it implemented in adventure mode and not dwarf mode.  I'm not sure if it's in there either, but I do remember it being said that certain civilization leaders would have pets, and I seem to remember the riding thing being mentioned related to that too.

I want my commander on a war bear, or even a war dragon.  I'm pretty sure we can't do it, but it's one of the ideas I kind of look forward too, and I hope at least horses become rideable and armorable in the future.

I can confirm that you can train War Elephants without a Dungeon Master, but Elephants are [PET] rather than [PET_EXOTIC], so that doesn't mean much.

mounts are a feature that he plans to implement in the future
if you look here: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html you will find a complete list of the features he plans to put into the game as of right now
gives you a perspective of how incomplete the game really is

To tame exotics you need a dungeon master but I think to train for war you don't need one, not sure.

Elephants aren't exotic pets, thats why you can tame em without the DM. War Elephants kinda suck, though - against anyone in armor they can't do anything, since they hit with their feet (which do blunt damage) and tissues for animals are really really low density (thus suck for blunt damage). Plus the feet are relatively small compared to the rest of the body, and apparently it doesn't yet take into account the huge legs and body thats attached to the foot.

I tried modding them to use their tusks to see if that would be better, but apparently the tusks are set to be super weak and way light too, and the actual tusks on the elephants are extremely tiny (relsize 25, which is 1/4 the size of their tails) making the tusks completely ineffective. Elephants in this version might as well be sheep.

Modding the elephants to have tusks 8x the size that they are currently (relsize 200) and editing the raws to have density of actual ivory (1700-2000, I gave them 2000, it was only 500) and upping the yields to be 1/2 that of bone (it was set to 1/20th that of bone) gives them a fairly effective weapon that can actually cause mild bruises through iron armor. It isn't enough for them to single handedly fight a single armored axe goblin goblin, but if you get a dozen or so of them piled on they can take them down and only lose 1 or 2 elephants.

Did you try making their tusk attacks edged attacks?

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I didn't, that might work better - it probably wouldn't, though, since the max_edge of teeth is so low. I guess you could modify that, but it just doesn't sit right with me having their tusks edged - I mean, slicing with tusks? They're big teeth, not swords.

Interestingly, they can do WAY better without any tissue modding if you just mod them to attack with a larger body part. I set them to gore with their upper body and loaded up the arena and the elephants were bruising the muscle and internal organs right through the iron armor. A single one would get chopped up and die, but a pair could very quickly take down an expertly skilled axe goblin with full iron armor.

I find myself unable to train a Jaguar, perhaps it does mean otherwise.

It could refer to the ability for any race to use them, and that races specific files determine if they can or not. So for example Giant Bats are tamable so batmen can ride them, and all those big cats are for elves to use.

I just traded for a breeding pair of giant jaguars.

I thought I saw a development note that riding was enabled for this version.  I hopse so.  I really hope what you can ride isn't species dependent.  I'ld love to have a squadon Giant Jaguar riding axe dwarves.

That's what DF needs, The gutbuster brigade.  Screw that elf and his cat. Thibbledorf Pwent is the real hero.

I think I'm going to mod the raws so I can have a squad of War-Walrus-riding Dwarven Snow Patrol. Tho i'll need to make walrus' tusks better than being smacked with a dead fish....
