Just thought of an alternative set of terms earlier today.

Now, I'd like to state that I'm one of those easily irritated folks who gets peeved to no end by "dorf", "clownite", "monies", and any number of other uselessisms.  Basically the only term that I can remember actually liking somewhat was "Goblinite".  Hell, I don't even use "Urist" as a catch-all, and I never name my dwarves McAnything.

Anyways, HFS.  Personally, I'm a traditionalist sympathizer, so I believe that the original, official term of "HFS" (and I do believe that these features qualify as easter eggs, in a sense) is generally the most appropriate.  It is, however, a rather generic term, and can occasionally fall victim to "Smurf Syndrome".

As an alternative to clownite, I considered the possibility of naming the materials based loosely on their properties.

Slade, being an incredibly hard material that is found in layers deep underneath the earth, would be termed "Hard Rock".  I'm debating as to whether the temple or the pit should be called "the Hard Rock Café".

Adamantine is trickier...  "Heavy Metal" doesn't really apply, since Adamantine is so light, but "Blues Metal" just doesn't seem to have the right ring to it.

What you call the demons, however, is beyond me.  Patrons?

Like I said though, I still regard "HFS" as the official term.

How about we don't use stupid placeholder names at all, because they wind up being ambiguous or confusing and make searching the forum/IRC logs a royal pain in the ass?

It's not like they're necessary anyway. If you want to refer to something that's a spoiler, put spoiler tags around it.

I can understand "HFS" as a general term, because it's pretty much the official one, but beyond that it just gets hard to keep track of and really messes up, say, searching the forum for things. I should be able to search for a post I remember about "slade" without having to wreck myself figuring out which arbitrary term we're using for it this week.

I agree. Even referring to it in arbitrary euphemistic terms makes the reader even more curious, thus looking it up and rendering the whole point of using such terms useless. The context the terms are used in also completely spoils the element of surprise, because you know there is something terrible that can be released, whereas if you'd just spoilered the phrase this wouldn't be the case (given that the new player does not actually open it).

Wait, what's wrong with "monies".  Its an actual word!  (It means more than one type of money.  Just like 'sheeps' or 'fishes' are proper if there is more than one species designated, or 'waters' if more than one body of water is referred to).

Right, if it's spelled "moneys" and isn't just used to refer to a single type of currency.  Otherwise, it's a "lolcute" term for cash.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There is solution to this and I think Toady will try implement this (but when?): dynamically generated HFS. And no as in
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
. Not as in
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
.

To be interesting, refreshing and unknown (only that it is DEEP is known) every time when we strike the earth, we need something with emergent properties to create novel structures. And I do not know if this is possible at all in today state of information technology.

Are those spoilers supposed to be switched? 'Cause the first one is what we have now...

This has been brought up in numerous threads, and while I'm opposed to a nickname at all, if there's going to be one, can it be a) not forced and b) not about clowns/the circus/that sort of thing again? Please.
Completely and utterly seconded!

Please. I'd been hoping for this as well. Reviving a thread for the sole purpose of saying you did is silly.

Why not "Hell" or "The Underworld?"

Why not "Hell" or "The Underworld?"

Then people know there is one. The point of spoiling it is so players might stumble upon Hell by accident and experience it for the first time freaking out rather than being like "oh, so this is what they were talking about on the forums." It's unlikely there's many players whose first HFS experience wasn't spoiled (probably in large part due to the clown analogy) but it's more of a common courtesy thing.
