It's the media, I'm sure.  It sells to controversy, and there's no place like the home front to sell it - not when so many of us seem to think that America is just inherently better than other countries.  They don't say it, but the way people act implies it - sometimes strongly.  It doesn't help that you have to take a plane to get anywhere other than Canada or Mexico - the rest of the world is a little more closely nit.

My sympathies. I can't begin to imagine what a tragedy this must be.

The leftist media, here, in Israel, claims, as usual, that the Russian government is to blame...
Or so I heard, at least. I don't read these kinds of "news" anymore. All I know is from what my friends at the university tell me or my parents when I visit them.

Americans don't get much news about other countries (aside from this silly war) unless we actively search for it. It's nice getting views from other places on this forum.

No kidding. It's really annoying not getting news here.
Except that sometimes PBS will play BBC News.

I'm not sure if it's gov't or media...but the forces that be seem to ensure that Americans remain largely naive of the rest of the world.  They seem to try to give just enough information to make us feel informed.

And yes, I am an American.  I didn't assume the thread title was Obama; the thread title just looked like interesting so I read it.  But yeah, it's REALLY hard not to be "self-centered" when we're actively deprived of news and culture of other nations...whether enemy, neutral, and actual ally.

I hope you're not joking because I'm a conspiracy theorist. So there. I said it.
Today it just seemed too perfect for it to not be staged, but I know that russians didn't do it. I just know that people here in poland are grinding money, and attention from the tragedy, and want to hammer ptriotism into our heads. I don't like that. I may be a pole, but my favourite country is Sweden.

Fuck yes, Scandinavia.

But why would Russia kill your president? I mean... that doesn't make too much sense?

>If< one had to look for conspiracy in this, then there would be no need to look anywhere farther than our own turf.
But I'm inherently alergic to all conspiracy theories, so I shan't bother to point out those possibilities.

For all of you guys overseas, here's a piece of trivia about our late president: Lech Kaczyński and Jarosław Kaczyński were twin brothers. Both were active in politics, and in fact, Jarosław still is. At one time, but a few years ago, they held between them two highest offices in Poland, that of the President, and the Prime Minister.
You don't find many countries in the world ruled by twins.
Also, when in their youth, they both played in a movie called "The two who stole the Moon"

I live in Warsaw too, today I walked pass the presidential palace and saw the sea of burial candles that surrounded it. The street is still crowded with loads of people there to pay respects. Even though is three days past the tragedy and I was there during working hours. What you don't see on the photos is the small village made by reporters near the scene. You can tell that the eyes of the whole world are pointed there. I'm not sure if this is a good thing.

As to the late president. I can't say I liked him as a politician. He was extremely right-wing. I remember living in the country when he and his brother had all the power. It felt like the conservative distopia pictured in LCS. Many people felt the same way, so first parliamentary election removed his brother from office and then his approval ratings plummeted. Now I feel bad about what i used to think of him.

About the conspiracy theorists, well... just today I spoke with a guy that already knows that the Russians are behind the catastrophe. As to why they would do it or how he wouldn't precise. It saddens me that people think this way especially as Russians are acting very nicely in regard to this tragedy.

In Poland some of the people are a bit... specific. They live in their own world, which isn't very similar to the real one. In this alternative universe our country is in the center of the world, surrounded by (covertly) Nazi Germany and Russia with personal grudge. There, it only makes sense that Putin ordered the plane destroyed - after all, every day before the breakfast he screams "I hate Poland", throwing flaming darts into a portrait of Wałęsa. Also, the Satan called personally and suggested it would be a great gift for his birthday.

Fortunately, those people are not very numerous. On the other hand, they are vocal, because they have a mission from the God Himself.

Poland investigators have full access to the site, remains, black boxes and air control crew. That does not look like as attempt to cover up anything.
Andrzej Seremet from polish investigators team already confirmed that air control insisted on plane aborting the landing.

I can understand why the Poles might be a bit...paranoid about their neighbors to either side (*cough* Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact *cough*).

And I can understand why people outside of Russia trust Vladimir Putin about as far as they can throw him.

That said, the more that comes out, the more this looks like a bona fide accident.

Da Polan'd - a Country Supreme at it's very centre of Da Europe, no lies!
Un magnifique un geographique et la historique la lesson:
Polando Superbo Republico, iz a mighty country of powerful warriorz! Behold their warlike spirit, as they duke it out after football(aka soccer) matches!
Them Poles be descendants of mighty Sarmatians of Sarmatia, who made Roman sissy boys cry! Just try playing Centurion on the highest difficulty setting and you'll see for yourself!
The motherland of Poles is however in dire peril since ancient times: the evil das Nazi empire on the west wants to invade us and retake their old houses in Festung Breslau, Danzing and assorted cities. To this very purpose they invented the evil beurocratic behemoth called EU!
But that's not all! From the North-East, hundreds of tanks of the Soviet, now disguised as Russian Federation await command to roll onto Polish plains and make the Russian language compulsory in schools again.
Also from the N-E, the evil Lithuanian separatists plot our downfall.
From the East, the pseudo-independent-while-covertly-russian-puppets of Ukraine and Belarus are planting illegal immigrants from Asia onto our soil, so that the mighty Polish blood would thin and falter.
From the North, the cold waves of Baltic Sea make our beaches shitty.
And finally, from the South...
...actually there's awesome and cheap beer in Czech Republic as well as in Slovakia. And the girls are sweet too!

edit: waaait, they probably hold a grudge against us for that invasion in 1968. And that border disputes before the IIWW. Must be up to no good.

What do you mean about "calming down"? The mourning period will last entire week.

As for the people, well, it depends. It's not as bad as it may seem from the outside. Most of the afflicted offices will function with minimal disruption, including the office of the president. The Speaker will be president-in-law until the end of July, when the people will elect a new one. It may be hard for Law and Justice, and the Democratic Left Alliance - their candidates were on the board of the plane.

As for the people, they are generally calm. Far right, of course, boils from the conspiration theories. Everyone else keeps the mourning civil, if sometimes too ostentatious.
