For clarity I guess it should be pointed out that in Poland, like in many other european countries, the presidency is a largely symbolic and ceremonial office. The executive power is with the prime minister, who attended the joint memorial with Putin a couple of days ago (which is why they were both at he scene so quickly). So the country isn't entirely decapitated, but there were a lot of big names on that one old plane. To me the biggest tragedy is that many of the passengers were relatives of the Katyn massacre victims, invited to participate at the memorial.

My condolences to the polish people.

You know, after that accident in 2003, when Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller nearly died in a helicopter(old Mi-8) crash, you'd think that the higher ups would take more precautions - get a new(not ages old) fleet of planes/copters. Or at lest not pack one plane to the brim with so many high ranking officials.

Americans tend to care about the President and a few notable senators.
Lots of americans don't even know that the president doesn't even run the whole thing.

Even last http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miros%C5%82awiec_air_accident accident where our officers died, people were demanding bigger attention to terrible state of our aviation.
There actually was some improvement. We ordered a number of medic choppers in place of our old MiGs.
But that was of higher priority than government planes, we always were short on money ;/

1940: NKVD murders a couple of thousand poles near smolensk

1947: Stalin orders NKVD to plant trees near Smolensk

2010: Polish plane crashes into trees while landing near Smolensk. Killing polish president, aswell as family members of 1940 massacre, finishing the job.
