I think you're going to want something like this:

This will be in place of the line that just says [BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:CHITIN_TISSUES] in your creature raws.  This imports all the normal tissues of the spider, then removes CHITIN, then declares a new CHITIN tissue with the tissue material replaced by slade.

Ah-ha! I knew there were two or 3 more ways to think about it! Of course the next one just felt so dumb that I new 1 or 2 more were lurking in the shadows!

The dumb one? Trying to use it directly on the [BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:EXOSKELETON_TISSUE_LAYERS:] line instead of CHITIN. Even now my heart says dumb. Not sure why... perhaps because it feels 'too easy' so not it.

I've run into that too.  I'm pretty sure it happens when you put too many restraints on SYMBOL selection in an entity file, ie, you've been too restrictive with SELECT_SYMBOL and SUBSELECT_SYMBOL and now the entity has no options left.

Honestly, though, I'm having fun with it. "You stab the troll in the head with your adamantine long sword, tearing the muscle, shattering the skull and tearing the thinkpan! The troll has been struck down."

Working on this, will edit later with some more feedback.  Right now the first problem is a typo in this line:

   [BODY_DETAIL_PLANT:HEAD:HAIR:TISSUE:LAYERS]

EDIT: Ok, I've got a stable version with a blank errorlog.  A few new entries to b_detail_plan and body_troll were necessary.  Fronds and "thinkpans" were not defined, so the game didn't know what to do with them.

Most of the errors stemmed from DF being picky when it comes to caste-level body definitions.  When you define a new body to be used, it does not inherit all of the materials and tissues of the previous body, so these all needed to be defined again, even if they're the same (this took me a while to hunt down).  The remaining few errors came from [BODY:HUMANOID:(blahblah)], which is not set up to use fronds or thinkpans.  I defined and used two new templates for this.

I have not yet had a chance to look over the entity file, but the creature file is now working properly.  I had to arbitrarily give it a creature ID, so you'll need to make sure that matches for the entity file.  Here is what I have, formatted to simply drag-and-drop into the raws.  My comments within the files themselves are denoted with a "#" tag next to them.

Hello guys, i'm new to modding vanilla DF, i did only some small stuff, by editing others mods, but now i got struck by this idea.
in DF dwarves are a strangre race, they can make a 50 meters tall Obsidian statue to spit lava on invaders  but they are on the same tech level of goblin for weapons, no wait they've less variety of weapons technologies!
My dwarven overseer has searched the problem's root, the dwarves are masters of mechanisms but thy use them only fo traps and waterworks, this has to change, so he ordered the record keepers to check the old books for discarded or forgotten technologies and have started the research of the following tools of destruction:

Dwarven's Mechanic Marvels Workshop
-Build a Pernicious Projector of Dwarven Wrath (aka Wrath Cannon), a weapon made by combining Spring,pump and torsion technologies to propell a stone/metal bullet at insanely high speed. the results are a gun(no gunpowder) stronger but heavier than crossbows made with:
Metal bars(any), mechanisms x2 , wood
-Build an Automated Apparatus of Stone Mayhem (aka WarDrill), a discarded mining tool that can be used To DRILL through any foe, a weapon heavier, way slower but extremely more dangerous than a axe or spear, use mining skill
buildt using: metal bars(any), mechanisms, Booze barrel, corkscrew
-Build a  "no cool name yet" (aka Goblin Shredder), a newly created automated axe that can rip throught any goblin and that can be buildt with a variety of materials
buildt using: Metal bars(any), mechanisms, large serrated disk, leather
-The forgotten use of eye protecting glasses have been restored an perfectioned by creating a metal mas as support
Mask buildt using, Metal bars(any), mechanisms, raw glass

as you can imagine the main advantage of those goods are that they're powerful and quite material friendly, their downside is that they're very slow to use and they take a lot of time to be crafted.
Any help is gladly welcolmed since i'm just starting with modding, please send me any link you think i could find useful, and if you want them i'ce done some sketches of what they should look like

-the project is about 5% done

154. When you get the word "adamantine" on your LA vocab, you quickly cross it out and replace it with "cotton candy" and spend the next 10 minutes in fetal position rocking back and forth in fear. (Yes, I actually did this.)
...Wait. Adamantine is real?...
...155. You are no longer sure what metals are real or fictional.

Recently I decided to update some of my older mods for 0.31.25, but have encountered a problem in one of them. I know its a problem that has been addressed on this thread more than once, but for the life of me, I cant find the source of the missing tissue thickness...
