I wonder if whales can be milked...
And there would be the creepy guy who takes it too far.

In the name of Armok, you're in a thread discussing a quantum whale breeding pile! Grow a beard and let him try milk one.

Sorry to ruin your fun, but whales don't have the pet or the pet_exotic tag so you can't breed them without modding.

Elephants are good for food though. I get over 100 meat per baby elephant that I cook, and they don't have the multiple litter rare tag for some reason so they really produce (twins, triplets - its a meat bonanza).

Of course you can breed them.  You may not be able to tame them, but it is entirely possible to build a meat industry around a captive herd of wild animals.  I haven't done it in DF2010 yet, but I've had entire meat industries based around contained breeding wild animal herds in 40d16.  You have to keep them out of sight of your dwarves and manipulate them with remote-controlled doors and bridges, and kill them with falls or traps instead of butchering.  Since whales need to live in water and will probably require mechanisms to manipulate and separate out the ones to be killed, their being wild will not make things significantly harder.

Of course, milking them, or training war whales, will be impossible.

You are now aware that somebody, somewhere, will mod whales to be size 9000.

I just had a dwarf hauling a cage with 50+ animals (horses, donkeys, cows and warthogs mostly). Its weight was 23000kg!

Also a stack of 900 meat is awesome. I quess you could make extremely valuable roast by mixing 3 stacks of whale meat with some very valuable ingredient.

Hi!

Well, at least it is impossible for the dwarf to carry both the bucket and the whale at the same time :) :) :) :)

And if he puts the whale IN the bucket?

Then, I think he has achieved legendary skill level in origami :) :) :)

In my next fort, I'm so going to breed whales selectively for size. Because farming is for hippies. Also, whale soap tower.

Well, although I have been unable to get a fortress up and running yet (combination of bugs and urges to mod something else)  I see from the content of this thread that a [carnivore] fortress will not be as difficult as it used to be.

Instead of barely keeping up with the fortress food demands with massive breeding programs numbering in the hundreds of animals, I'll have 400,000 units of miscellaneous meaty bits before I even kill off all the hunt-able game.  I am happy now.

In terms of farms, can you have a breeding pit next to a room with spikes? Any animal wanders into the room get locked in and spiked.
