If he is on a beach, water tends to move constantly there. Combined with the fact that water flows faster now, the whales where probably beached and possibly even smashed on a cliff.

smashed on a cliff.

HOLY CARP. HOLY CARP.

Prepared whale heart [23]
Prepared whale lung [94]
Prepared whale EYE [2]
Prepared whale intestines [142]
Chopped whale liver [47]
Whale tripe [47]
Prepared whale kidney [46]
Prepared whale spleen [23]
Whale sweetbread [23]
Whale fat [160]
Prepared whale brain [47]
Whale meat [434]

Two meals out of the eyes alone. Holy carp.

AND THEY JUST CAUGHT ANOTHER WHALE!
Wait a moment.

Does this mean that with 3 whales worth of meat, you could theoretically make a stack of food with around 1300 units?

Why I believe it does.
Any chance of elves bringing a breeding pair?

The ELVES didn't bring it.  He CAUGHT  the damn thing.

Also, excuse my math.  Roasts use 4 food items, not 3.  That would mean food stacks in the neighborhood of 1700, not 1300.

If whales don't air drown, you could have a LAND whale farm! It would be like an ever expanding laboratory-grown meat lump

He's saying that elves bringing a breeding pair, like they bring other animals, would be awesome.

Unfortunately, I don't think it happens. Elves don't like the sea. And the sea doesn't like them. (Remembers the cliff approach to one of his older forts.)

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

no elves don't make terrariums to hold fish in because they hate glass (since you need to use wood to make it).

Come to think of it, I never seem to get seafood from elves, do I?

Well that's lame! If I were an elf, I would SO become a legendary fisher elf who lives by the sea side, pulling up jellyfish after jellyfish.

Actually, glass can be made with no wood at a magma glassmaker. Elves just seem to suffer from an allergic reaction to magma. Generally it is a severe, burning reaction on all regions of the body.

Wow, sounds similar to that condition that humans and goblins seem to suffer from. Strange old world isn't it.

Hi!

Actually, elves don't mind green glass making it a good trading good.

But speaking of ridiculous weights carried, in the 2D version when you got your anvil with your smith after embark, I had a raccoon (I think) steal my anvil! After that, I decided to make a furniture stockpile whenever I embarked in the 2D version right after the food stockpiles :) :)

I air drowned (yea i don't know how that happened) about 7 whales a few days ago in arena mode inspired by the cattle ranching thread (there was whale discussion there too) and the meat i got ranged from 400 to about 900, so a 3600 sized stack of roasted whale isn't sounding impossible if you only let the gigantic and hugely muscular ones breed.

The whale farm is going to make the mermaid farm look obsolete.  Who cares if the bones aren't worth as much?  Quantity as a quality of it's own!  Plus you can sell a stack of 1300+  *Whale Meat Roasts*!

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

I wonder if whales can be milked...

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.
