I just found both a shaft of *SPOILER* and the magma sea at Z -40 of a Z -150 map.  This means that the *THING* should be almost 100 Z-levels tall, so I'll make the throne room out of as much of *IT* as possible. (Maybe even *INSIDE* it...)

can we set whatever world generation settings we want as long as we keep every layer? i mean, increasing cavern openness and decreasing passage density

Yes, world gen settings don't qualify as modding, and as long as you keep every layer, it's fine!  Just be sure to include in your final description what you did so people can do the same thing if they like what you did!  :)

Hmmm... I was thinking like have one lever that drops the entire throne room into the magma sea.... XD

How 'bout a leaver that drops THE REST OF THE FORTRESS into the lava, leaving the throne room intact?  ::)

You would be. My. GOD.

ALSO:

I noticed in one map that the magma seemed to flow "downhill" in a certain part of the sea under my fortress, leaving 1-2z of room. Anyone else seen something like this?

This would make me happy, but alas, it has not happened to me and i will have to drain it manualy.
Speaking of that. Will magma be refilled from the borders or not?

Well, I was lucky enough to have found a magma pipe extending up into a cavern right under my fortress, (I actually found it while digging out what was going to be my main stair) so I'll use that unless I decide it'd be better used for my forges. (Which it probably is)

i have decieded to dig out a cavern for my fortress to be inside, and learned a valuable lesson.

PROTIP: Don't cause cave-in's into lava. lots of magma flies back up. the miner responsible is no longer alive. good thing nobody was using the smelter that got drenched ...

It's a good thing we have until the end of May to do this because I breached the Hidden Fun Stuff to get some exotic materials for my throne room and my FPS has fallen to 0 (Without crashing). It will probably take until mid May to set off my glorious snaking multiple floor clown obliterator (I don't believe in a standing army. I believe in cruel and unusual architecture).

Sounds fun. I will put something together (started yesterday).

http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-8527-beachanvils

I kinda bypassed all of the caverns, was harvesting from second layer down until a forgotten beast attacked.

I think I will try a waterfall on the edges. See if the magma men can handle tons of falling obsidian! It might be too much fun.

And there will need to be a Lever of Damocles.

I'm nearing the end of my second year here, wondering how the heck gold flasks and goblets that I KNOW I don't have keep appearing to be stolen by monkeys; and why my legendary stone crafter's been making 'large native silvers'.  Of course, I come up with no loss on either, so I don't really care.

The magma pipe I have will probably be where I put the throne room, but I may decide just to use it to fill a lake of molten rock after the throne room itself has been built there. (but on a lower level, of course)

Would it be okay for my throne room to hang from a series of flying buttresses instead of the ceiling?

You know, to look more like a spider than a chandelier?

I think that, as long as there is magma underneath and to the sides, anything will do

Any issues if we've revealed the map?  I had meant to make a backup, but inadvertently copied the wrong save (wiki indicates that there are bugs with Reveal2.exe with regards to DF2010).

Wanted to plan a little in advance, eg know where the coolest place to build my throne room with a particular idea in mind, and didn't want to have to dig all through some 10+ layers worth of stone locating it.  As it turns out, I can dig strait down to get there, though bypassing the caves was not my intention.

I had another project on the map that I had just finished, so re-genning isn't really an option; took me 3 weeks to get that done!
