I've embarked on a human town, digging down right in one of their shops to build my fort underneath the town. Digging my staircase even further, I broke into the caverns, where I found something quite unsettling.

This square of engraved land exists on every underground z-level, the engravings are mostly of mundane stuff: plants, furniture, shapes, but there are a few of Gujeg Shadowabyss, the deity of the night and food.

I then discovered the square aligns perfectly with (though is much larger than) the human temple above it, so it's probably just due to a bug with the way temples are engraved. Still, it's an odd thing to find.

Well, the good news is what you're witnessing is perfectly harmless.
But wow, that's a very impressive bug you've found there.  I wonder how far down it goes... does it just affect the surface of the initial caverns, or the ones below it as well?

Temples built on ancient sites of great power and at the deepest levels...

It has potential in other places, but if it's just them engraving all the way down, it should be fixed.

It's still there.

In other news, the water in the temple bottom has all dried out, leaving an engraved, muddy square room. I'm going to turn it into an arena.

If this happens over an underground lake you get engravings/smoothing visible OVER the 7/7 water, I'm not sure how the water behaves but it is definitely strange.

Well wait a second...who is this god?  Didn't Toady say something about certain beings tricking humans into thinking they were gods?  Any chance that's what's happening here?

Yes, it's probably a bug.  There have been plenty of bugs relating to the interaction of the surface and subterranean worlds.  But it'd be cool if it weren't a bug but rather the effect of a demon posing as a god.
