So, in summary, there are two things you need on every map:

1) sand (cause who wants to import 20 bags of sand)
2) a pool

Even though I see fish in my underground cavern pools, and I can zone it for fishing (as in, it shows numbers like "12 tiles valid for fishing"), they can't seem to catch anything in them. I'll assume its cause they're super fish.

Hmm odd, I had a magma powered glassworks but he went to the meeting area. I built a non magma powered glassworks, still didn't go, I undid the meeting zone and he went to the non magma glassworks. He then made a perfect gem out of green glass.

While google told me that if they want shell they ask for shell not body parts it does seem to be shell they want.

But, since fishing is bugged you won't be able to catch any turtles.

Are you sure freezing didn't kill your fish? One of my fisherdwarves were catching fish(and turtles) in a pool topside in a non freezing in winter area.

I had several maps were no fish were caught ever. Toady said he fixed a bug regarding fish not being caught for 04. It seems not all maps are affected by this bug.

Hmm... on my last map, I was playing on a freezing biome, and indeed I wasn't catching any fish.
My lastest map is a Temperate biome, and I'm getting them like hotcakes.

I'll have to test this.
