Dwarven justice, 2010 style

Has anyone had a fortress up long enough, and stable enough to get the dwarven justice system going?

I know with the new changes, it takes a lot of work to actually kill someone with a hammer. And if you take the hammerer's hammer away its nearly impossible for one dwarf to wrestle another to death. Most likely one of them will just starve first.

Is it worth just modding out demands and mandates so that your legendary armorsmith won't be hammered to death because you couldn't produce a crystal glass item? Or are the punishments, including beatings and hammerings, so ineffective that it doesn't really matter, and also gives your doctors some more practice?

I'm pretty sure the Hammerer doesn't carry out specifically lethal punishments, as one way of saving a dwarf from such a fate is to get him to wear good armor beforehand.  In 0.31 the Hammerer will probably at worst break a few of the dwarf's bones, nothing to really cry about.

With how weak hammers currently are in 2010, this should be less of an issue.

Low-mass aluminum hammers should mitigate it even more.

My manager was punished to a beating for failing to meet mandates. This punishment apparently consisted of being whacked with a shield a few times and having them bounce off her pig-tail clothing harmlessly.

wow, maybe we should start armoring up those civilian craftsmen and managers so as to protect them from punishments.  can you force a hammerer to arm with a wooden weapon?  mine hasnt arrived yet, so I cant test with the new military settings.

Materials system, yeah, totally changes dwarven justice.

Even if they deal a significant hit, if it's on the third toe of their left foot....it's better than before when they might just outright crush their skull. And now we gots the doctors to take care of them.

The shield bash is funny though.

Long sentences are fatal anyway. They will only feed and give water to the convicted dwarf once.

I modded my hammers into organ-bruising spiked pain machines and so my dwarven justice is unmitigated, bone-shattering pain. But with regards to sentencing being lethal, can't we assign dwarves to chains and have food and water on hand within their little radius?

That typically works, yes. Or at least it did in the old version.

Not sure about that, my legendary axe dwarf has a broken toe, the medical dwarves just stand over him not accomplishing anything, so a broken bone is life in hospital for my current fort.

Cross your fingers for a bone doctor in your migrant wave. I believe surgery and bone-setting below 'competent' or 'skilled' results in wasted effort.
