[HUGE SPOILERS] Screw this, we're outta here.
« on: April 09, 2010, 12:22:48 pm »

So, I punctured hell.
I immediately floor over the breech, and miraculously, the dwarves make it in time.
Desiring a challenge, I move my military to the breech and order and access hole to be dug.
I dig the whole, and wait for the demons to arrive.
And wait.
And wait.
Fed up with waiting I zoom down to hell and look for the demons.
And it turns out they're just wandering around.

This happen to anyone else?

EDIT: My military is roaming hell, killing demons.

How did you manage to floor over the breach? My masons all fled like kittens. Did you lose the miner that breached hell?

I did this too. The catch was that my miner was a legendary mason, and I breached at the top of the helltube, from a diagonal. b-C-w.

Yeah, I give miners who will be doing Adamantine digging some mason training; I set aside a burrow for them, and have them build meaningless walls so, in case of emergency, I can allow Raw Adamantine for common use and seal that thing right back up.
When I most recently breached hell, the demons ran straight up the tube like, well, bats outta hell, but they weren't quite quick enough.  My FPS is hurting, but I'm not dead.  Just as well, my military is walls, and a dwarf  with an iron mace.

Warning, the fps is about 5

I managed to floor the breach because I was near the edge of hell, and demons spawn at the center.

Speaking of Hell, here's something that I've been pondering.

Say that you make a tunnel that stretches down from the surface into the firey pits of the damned that does not enter your fort at any point. From a strictly strategic standpoint, would it be better to have the entrance to the tunnel inside of a major human city or forest home? While the humans are individually stronger fighters and would be better protected with their metal armor, the elves are usually far more numerous and tend to have more bowmen in my experience.

I wonder how well it would work to have a second shaft that ends just above the slade level that could be breeched after the demons swarm your neighbors and then your own troops sent below to open a second front. That or masons. Have your fort sealed from the surface first, breech the tunnel leading to the surface, wait a while, make the second breech, and then send in dwarves to seal off the surface tunnel. Build a throne room in Hell itself.

I've embarked on an ocean that somehow has 20+ z level sheer cliffs right next to it. My plan is to build a pier out into the ocean, and use a pump pyramid to go down and dig through the ocean bottom. Then, let the water back in and let any surviving demons attack all 20 levels of archer bunkers.

Seeing as the military's a bit borked right now, and I suspect the evil bastards can swim, this is how I'd deal with aquatic and magmatic (?) demons: When you've found the shiny blue tube, seal your miner in with a large magma pool in a room (no physical blockade like doors, just magma). Let the miner open up HFS. He is a sacrifice.

The demons will begin pathing into the magma. At this point, you will want to dump water onto the far side of the magma to obsidianize the exit and then the entrance to lock them in the magma room. From here you can prepare a supported-only-by-supports block of wall in the room above and drop it through the floor onto the smelly demons' heads. In theory you don't need to fill the below room with magma, but it's faster to obsidianize a magma block than to build a wall, and when the initial dig is done the demons will need to be able to path up.

For overkill, fill the collapsing room with water. The demons will either be horribly crushed or rendered into awesome statues.

I was actualy planning to build a huge water-tower and use the build-up pressure of some 100+ Z-levels of water to smack the demons into a fine pulp (or at least push them back into hell). By the time the water-tower is empty, my military and siege engineers should be at their battle stations for the most epic fight in quite a while.

From the looks of a different hell-breaching video on DFMA, the adamantine "tubes" appear to be relatively straight, without unnecessary curving about.

This means that you can just clear the area above the tube, set up a relatively large-sized chunk of rock for a cave-in (you can't know exactly where the center of the tube is going to be), and hook it up to a support and lever.

When the tube is breached and the demons start climbing their way up through the many z-levels of tube, pull the lever.  The cave-in will continue until it meets a wall of solid rock.  In the middle of the tube, where the demons are, they've just got floors.  This means that the entire hollow chamber will just accordion onto the demons inside, pushing them back and (hopefully) causing massive amounts of damage.

Due to the large area of the cave-in, your miner might also be sucked in.  Alternatively, try digging into the tube from a lower level, where you've got a protective buffer above your miner (while the demons are still just as vulnerable).

You might be able to use the short time while they're picking themselves off the floor to seal it off again, or to muster the troops so you can fight off some now significantly weakened enemies.
