Alternate uses for minerals?
« on: April 09, 2010, 05:29:21 am »

I found some pyrolusite in my new fortress, which I'd never heard of before, so I looked it up, and Wikipedia said it's used to remove tints from glass. So, naturally, I wondered if DF should let us do that - pyrolusite plus pearlash plus sand equals perfect glass, worth almost as much as crystal glass. So what other ordinary stones can you find that might have alternate, moddable uses?

Realgar, Cobaltite, Cinnabar and a few other types of rock are traditionally used for dyes of various types.

Jet and obsidian are also used as gem-stones in some societies.

Saltpeter is used in making gun powder.

Just a few extra ideas, heh.

I'm actually planning an alchemy mod to take advantage of stones like these, among other things. For example, turning Petrified Wood (the stone) into Ancient Wood, which has a high mod value and density.
