Welding the gates shut...
« on: April 09, 2010, 12:42:57 am »

So to speak.

So here's the deal.  For at least the next few days we're stuck with a version where weapon traps are useless, the military is intermittent and half the hostiles you come across are nigh invincible.  I'm not complaining or anything.  I mean we expected a buggy release.  Still it's all we have to work with for the moment.

So what is there left to do?  Wall yourself in, that's what!  And this version seems to be designed with that very idea in mind.  If you're careful you can gather wood from underground caverns.  Sedimentary layers and the occasional magma ocean provide all the fuel you'll ever need and there's plenty of ore and gems to go around.  So really what's stopping us from ditching the trade depot and just focusing on our own little projects?  Building mega-constructions above ground might be a little difficult but I think it still can be done if you're careful and do a little pre-planning.

Not really sure if this is a rant or what.  Just thinking out loud, I guess.  It's really not as fun(or FUN) as allowing trade but right now if you want your fortress to survive past 10 years it seems to me to be the only option.

So what are your thoughts?  Any alternatives?  Or would it be just as fun to shut the gates one last time?

From what I've been able to piece together, weapons do work, but VERY differently. For Blunt weapons, weight is the most valuable factor it seems. And edged weapons work perfectly fine. But ranged weapons are currently worthless, and since that is usually my primary line of defense, turtling like you suggest may be the best choice for now.

PS: In my opinion the two most effective weapon times atm are Battle Axes and Warhammers.

I find that warhammers are next to useless due to the fact that dwarves like to just bruise everything to a pulp. Axes are the way to go, swords are good too. Slashing damage is now the best damage.

Hi!

I have not tested this on intelligent foes like goblins, but my testing with animals indicates that giant axe blades work fine in weapon traps. While wooden menacing spikes need several goes to kill a deer (with traps loaded to full capacity), giant axe blades seem to have a good chance of cutting off big parts of creatures. I don't know how they fare against armored opponents, but I am optimistic.

I had fort crumble very slowly. Pathing was the main issue but other than that? Military killed everything that moved (axe,2x swords, 1 spear) every fight gave doctor some work (some ribs, a hip, one lost an arm) but it was all fun. Fps was in epic low but everything was ok. And now i have a very slow tantrum spiral :D. The only regret is that none of the military dudes named his weapon.

I guess it all depends on your luck: how much bugs you stumble upon.

I've found war hammers and maces to be tremendously effective and incapacitating opponents, if not killing them. I pair up my hammerdwarves with an axedwarf of swordsdwarf, and I've been slaughtering my way through everything to show up. A -steel battle axe- basically means nothing short of megabeasts (and presumably Fun) can stop you.

The goblins just showed up with a pikemaster, a mace lord, and a half-dozen trolls, and I took 2 casualties. One was a week or two later from the infection. Weapons are plenty effective.

<-- honestly confused as to what everyone's complaining about with weapons.

I think it is because in Fortress Mode, Dwarves are incredibly inept at attacking at low skill/stat levels and can't land the most effective type of attack for hammers. Edged weapons however do amazing damage regardless. In fact, in Adventure mode, I took down a GCS with a Bronze Two-handed Sword solo w/ no stat training.

I'm using a fair amount of cage traps, they're pretty effective.

Indeed, I go for squad setup like this:

Hammer
Axe
Sword
Spear
Hammer
Axe
Sword
Spear
Crossbow
Crossbow

Basically, hammers keeps oponents down and i relly on axes/sword to deliver guaranteed killing blows by cutting off extremities. Spears are there to capitalize on lucky pierces of vital organs.

Ranged weapons are great, if the bolts are nice and sturdy. Iron bolts do a hell of a lot of damage. Adamantine bolts are so light they bounce off. I wonder what slade bolts would do...

edit: wow, slade bolts BREAK BONES.

This only further demonstrates the greatness of Dwarf Fortress. The Dwarven military now works best with squads carefully organised into melee gank groups with a couple of ranged. :)

Is there any chance of a mood dwarf making a weapon or armor or bolts out of stone?
Moody dwarves will use ANY material they want to for their mysterious constructions, including stone. So you very well can get weapons, armor, or bolts if they claim the proper workshop and have one of those in mind. As I said, it's a matter of luck- both that they want to make a weapon/armor/ammo, and that they use the stone you want them to. But, the possibility exists for it to happen.
