Ya, military works ok, no worse than before once you figure out how to make it work. I've had legendary fighters kill forgotten ones with their bare hands (3 out of 4 FBs died this way). But ya, everything just takes longer now. It's more like Sins of a Solar Empire battles than Starcraft battles now. Although that said, I have seen my axedwarves 1 shot gophers by just chopping them in half. I would speculate that could be done to many creatures once axe skill is up enough.

, and that they use the stone you want them to. But, the possibility exists for it to happen.

Forbid every other stone type, and they'll use the one you want them to.

Moody dwarves flat-out ignore forbid settings. They do have something of a preference for closer items, so you could put it in a stockpile near the workshop, but it's hardly a guarantee.

If you really want it then put your workshops in a separate area,  when a moody dwarf enters lock the door.
make sure the stockpile in there contains all your best materials forbidden and watch as they grab the closest items.

Ah, my bad. Guess its changed. They did adhere to forbid settings in 40d though. Probably a good change though.

Wouldn't an artifact weapon with the "lots of materials in it" exploit be heavier? And thus deal a lot of damage?

Or did Toady fix the World Quern bug?

I put a bunch of goblins locked in a small room and fired a balista at them for several hours. Only some minor scrapes and bruises (and 1 knocked out tooth).

They didn't actually, which is what I'm basing my statement on.

I don't know if they had to respect forbid settings, but I know that they did respect them every time I bothered to check. This thread supports that observation.

They didn't respect economic stone settings. Forbidden means forbidden.

After seeing what my lone commander did to a group of goblin ambushers, I'd say that yeah, high skill will definitely speed things up.

I think you guys might be over-reacting. With a military of four, 2 swordsdwarves and 2 wrestlers, I've killed 50 crundles, 2 gremlins, a Jabberer and a Forgotten Beast. Only the Beast got a kill, because the guy forgot his sword. :|

I agree that the military works fine, exept that I still haven't got any marksdwarves to fire their crossbows.

Some new beasts are unkillable now though. I once severed a titans legs and trunk, but my military started dying from thirst before it showed any signs of actually dying. In my current fort there are some ash worms those are likewise unkillable; beating them "strikes off the rest of the tissue", but their bodies never actually take damage.

I haven't been able to test weapon traps because every place I embark has no goblins or kobolds nearby and all the scary baddies from below have the trap avoid tag. I'm getting impatient. I really want to see the combat logs from a creature walking over a weapon trap.
