Who will find "Dwarf Heaven" first?
« on: April 07, 2010, 11:39:16 am »

In the previous version, a single 5x5 map became EPIC known as "Dwarf Heaven" This map had:
A bottomless pit
Magma Pipe
Underground River
Chasam
Flux stone / Marble
Vast gold Deposits (in the thousands)
And HFS

This map inspired epic Forts and Megaprogects.  but als with the new version it is defunct.. .So.. The Hunt is on!

The Challenge?  Agin in at least a 6x6 (maybe bigger) map, who shall find a Map carrying ALL the new features as wel las the best of the old? Post your best maps here!  using the "Reveal" cheat is deeply encouraged as well for faster hunting!

Errr... Apart from fun aboveground stuff, like waterfalls, isn't every map chock full of features?  The problem before was how biome/terrain dependent so many features were, and the fact that the features couldn't overlap (without hilarious disaster).

That said, I recommend embarking on a glacier, with the only feature being a cave.  That gets... Lovecraftian.  DF needs shoggoths.

A bottomless pit - Removed
Chasm  - Removed
Vast gold Deposits  - all ore is plenty, find gold and there will be plenty of that too.
And HFS - Everywhere

Magma Pipe - Only Volcanoes now i think, magma on all maps with option enabled
Underground River - Included in the underground caves?
Flux stone / Marble - Marble is good.

To me it seems that the 'Dwarf heaven' is no more. Find the terrain with desired features that fit your megaproject or fort and that's it.
Maybe its better to have terrain categories like:
Nice cliff face, marble, valuable metals and an interesting world gen (beasts & invasions)

Adamantine sword with undead temple is still not-everywhere feature.
So basically we got flux, magnetite, volcano, brook and temple as useful features.

Dwarf heaven is exactly where it should: deep underground. :D

Now everywhere is dwarf heaven. With magma, water and trees in even the harshest conditions!

Which if you ask me, is absolutely fantastic.

Is adamantine an alloy? And, an undead temple? Is that like a new civ or something?

New question! If I were to remove elves [INTELLIGENT] tag in the raws, would it work?

The first thing I thought when I saw this thread is that instead of digging too deep, you build too high.

Didn't the upper limit disappear with the lower limit? Anyone feel the need to make an enormous tower and see if there's anything waiting up there?

I modded my files slightly, including the inorganic_stone files (before I heard about how abundant everything was).

I then embarked on a 5x5 map that has:
A magma pipe ~30z levels below surface
2 biomes, one of which has an aquifer
Sand
a brook
Flux (marble, iirc)
Hematite/Magnetite (forget which one)
ridiculous amounts of aluminum (going to try to carve my dining hall and nobles rooms out of the deposits)

All I'm missing is... bituminous coal  >:(

Oh, and the brook freezes.

I hate to be nitpicky, but my site hardly had thousands of gold spots. With reveal, someone dutifully counted and found roughly 200.  ;).

But yeah, the new version, all you need to really decide on is if you want goodness or evilness in your embark site and bam, insta-heaven.

The Grand List of Features to look for:

Unicorns
Zombies
Skeletons
Flux
Sand
Aquifer?
River
Cavern Area: Underground Lake
Cavern Area: Underground Cavern/Mushroom Forest
Cavern Area: Magma Sea
Cavern Area: HFS
Cavern Area: Mysterious Construct

and Sedimentary is always good. Sandstone/marble are the ideal layers, giving you fucktons of copper (native copper in sandstone and malachite in marble) to train your smiths on, then iron (magnetite, limonite, magnetite, hematite, and magnetite in the sandstone) and flux (marble) for steel.

It does seem like a place which can manufacture vast amounts of steel would be heaven now. Also perhaps lead for blunt weapons.

Yes, that too. Galena lives in igneous extrusive, metamorphic (there's that marble again!), granite, and limestone. Granite and metamorphic are practically everywhere now.
