Glacier Life is Still Impossible
« on: April 06, 2010, 10:25:33 pm »

I was kind-of hoping that we'd be able to melt ice into water.

Nope. Still not possible.

And what more, with the inability to build farms on unmuddied soil, plump helmet brewing is no longer feasible.

All or Almost All sites should have water - it will just be in the caverns. So dig down dworfs.

Edit: I also believe magma can be used to melt ice to water.

Already found it. Wow, I guess these caverns things are what the update was for, eh? :P

Not only is there ample water, you will find yourself with massive amounts of trees and shrubs to harvest!

I'm working on a mod for glacier creatures, but it will take a long time due to the massive amount of data needed now. That should make getting food possible before you strike caverns.

Unfortunately, my cave happens to be a desolate hellhole with troglodytes and death.

Diggin deeper, cap'n.

So I'm guessing your going to call that cavern ground zero and build your fortress directly under it? It has become a popular choice these days. Even better is building an above ground style fortress in them.

I have one cavern that is entirely ground and troglodytes, and the other is water and unknown god-forsaken fish.

I'm going with the ocean paradise.

I've built a dock. Any idea how to turn this into a farm?

Just dig out one of those columns next to your dock, build a pump, man it, mud!

Flood gate and lever. Dig out a small area next to or under the under ground lake, then use these tools to make a controlled flood before letting the water spread out and evaporate. Remember, you won't need much!

You also might want to build some guard rails around the edges of your farm to keep your dwarves from falling in.
