I like the clean lines that smooth walls make
smooths .. channels.

I tend to smooth channels early, on the basis once they are full of water it's hard to and also they are like pipes and pipes are smooth right?

Most other things I wait till later to smooth.

Thank god someone else gets annoyed at that too. Do you clear out rocks from channels before filling them too? Sometimes I think I have issues, but then lots of DF players seem to.

Yeah, I create small rock dumps in the hallways of my storage center and clear out everything after I mine it. I love maps with Lava and/or Chasms for the sole reason of dumping shit in them.

The worst part about river items is that there is NOTHING you can do about them. One option is damming the river and ceasing the flow as to collect it on the ground, but the problem with that is dwarves cant walk on brook/river tiles, so you have to mine them out. Even then, the top will now be discolored a darker blue and then you're just screwed.

Use the hide feature, d-b-h, for stuff that is inaccessible or takes too much effort to move large scale.

That's a sweet as sweetbread fortress you got going there! Be sure to tell me when a forgotten beast swims in and shreds every living thing in sight!

I thought this was a fucking joke!

Just block off any entrances from the cavern to your fortress. :P

As cool as open air cavern areas sound they are too dangerous. :( Clear glass walls are a nice alternative though.

You also might want to build some guard rails around the edges of your farm to keep your dwarves from falling in.
What do you build to use as guard rails?

I think vertical bars work.

I was kind-of hoping that we'd be able to melt ice into water.

Nope. Still not possible.

And what more, with the inability to build farms on unmuddied soil, plump helmet brewing is no longer feasible.

Dropping walls of ice onto the stone layer works though. Just drop 8x8 into a stone pit and get plenty of water. You just don't get mud out of the initial drop area so you still need to flood (or fill pond) your farm after the fact.

I just barely managed, while having to trade for more food/ale in winter, to dig out a 30x30x2. I'll never run out of water! Only wished I smoothed out the pond lake first.

Side note: Turning Yetis into pincushions with spears is fun. They seem to last a while even after they have fallen unconscious.
