Military Dressing
« on: April 06, 2010, 09:41:44 am »

My god the new screen is great!

At least it would be, if the bloody dwarves would follow the orders...

I've got my Dwarves wearing a full set of steel armor, or atleast I think they do.

Helm
High Boots
Gauntlets
Chain Shirt
Breastplate
Leggings
Greaves
Shield

This should, atleast by the 40d version work. However, I can't seem to get them to equip it all! Are there any of the listed items that take up the same slots?

This could also be general iffy behavior... One dwarf is missing everything but greaves, while another refuses legwear entirely

Yeh, it's kind of annoying that they only wear their stuff when they want to. But still, it's a very nice feature and I hope that it will work properly soon.

My first utilized uniform was:

Hood
iron Chain mail shirt
iron chain mail leggins
iron high boots
iron gauntlets
iron short sword

Can you spot the two fatal mistakes I made?

Hey, I'm cool with you tying a dog up and shooting it with a ballista if you're short on elves, but there's not need to lie about it to us.

I am not certain, but I think soldiers put on their uniform on top of other clothing... If so, let em chafe alot. When in doubt i'll nickname my chief doctor "Mordin Solus". He knows what to do about that.

But no, not what I meant.

You forgot a helmet and a shield.
Also, shouldn't there be two boots and two gauntlets?

We have a winner.
Yes, I wanted them to wear hoods instead of helmets... Because it looks cooler. Unfortunately I just recently realized (one tickled brain later), that hoods can be worn over helmets fine, apparently.

Shield is correct too... what was I thinking.

I am also certain, that the selections for boots and gloves count as pairs. Would be stupid if you had to assign a glove for the right hand AND the left hand.... but... one chain and one big bad gauntlet? that's kinda style...

I've had big problems with dwarves not wanting to equip items you made BEFORE you set them to wear the uniform.

Set the uniform, then forge the armor and they seem to equip it 90% of the time. Setting exact match instead of partial match also seems to help quite a bit.

Of course they still grab two shields and 2 - 3 weapons sometimes, I have not figured out a way around that.

I think I saw in the military menu the option to have the military uniform replace or go on top of the clothes

leggings and greaves can't both be worn.
looking at the raws, greaves are solid plates, and leggings are elastic -both have the same values for coverage and thickness but greaves have 6 material size and leggings 5, which means that leggings only need a single bar of metal to make whereas greaves need two.
tl;dr: only one leg armor can be worn, choose chain for one bar or plate for 2.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...
It should be pretty fun though.

1. Dwarves do follow orders - you have to make sure you set it to the right Alert. (/ and * on the Schedule screen, I think). Barracks are required for Training, where you;
a. Make the Barracks.
b. Go to the Barracks "bed" room that you set.
c. Hit "t" for Train - it's an option as well as others available.

2. There's an option in uniforms to wear it over or replace clothing - beware replacement. I set my dwarves to wear steel armour (replacing their clothes)... There were only helmets. So I had naked dwarves running around my barracks doing their individual training drills - exception of helmets.

There's actually some kind of bug with training right now where dwarves only do it properly if inactive (set their alert level to Inactive, it's not technically an 'order').

Dwarves can follow active orders as well (ie. not just scheduled ones) - you can tell them to move somewhere or kill something after selecting the squad/dwarves/dwarf in the squad screen. Just keep in mind the bug where they will never stop pursuing or attacking any enemy they see (whether you want them to fight it or not) until one of them is dead.
