Where is everyone building bedrooms now?
« on: April 06, 2010, 09:14:41 am »

So, I used to dig shafts down to the very lowest z-level, and start my bedroom complexes down there, with industry and other things more towards the surface in the shafts.

Now, I can't dig down even a few z-levels without hitting caverns and all sorts of other stuff. I'd like to avoid having sleeping dwarves disturbed by noise, but don't want them having to trek too far to sleep either...

What are you all doing?

You're lucky (or unlucky, as you may see it).  I've got a 20-z-level vertical staircase straight down in the earth with multiple exploratory tunnels running out of it and I haven't found a single underground feature yet  ???.

I actually dug up into a mountain for my housing, figured there wouldn't be anything to get in the way there.

Build an uber high tower on pillars and house everyone at the top?

I do what I actually have been doing all along. I bring enough distance between my industrial complex and my living quarters.

Usually I start with an entrance, that leads down a few z-levels, passing the death walk and trading post right into a "central shaft". From there I split up directions. For example: Living quarters are in the east, industrial and storage area in the west and the communal/recreational areas in the north (while the entrance is in the south). The shaft itself is wide enough, so that no noise will ever touch the living quarters and everyone can rest in peace. In theory that is.... practically, I don't care.

I dig down into the caverns, looking for a nice pillar to set up my fortress.
Then I relocate all my Industry into said pillar, trying to squeeze in as much as possible.

Pretty much a total overhaul, since I used to build symmetric and clearly structered fortresses.

Is noise back in now? I don't recall hearing any complaints in 40d when my miners expanded the barracks.

I know noise was in 40d, as I'd occasionally get unhappy thoughts from it, but I honestly always ignored it. If you give every dwarf their own bed and build a huge common dining hall,  they'll all be so happy about their friends and the awesome table that a little noise won't prevent them from being ecstatic.

I always just house my dwarves in living quarters near whatever labor area they work at, so farmers sleep near the farms, crafters near the workshops, etc.

I'm still doing what I always did...  Temporary housing a few feet from my workshops while I figure out how I can structure my bedrooms.  Right now, though, I'm in the process of moving it all into the caverns.  Because that's AWESOME.

I never care about noise.  These are Dwarves.  The sound of chainmail being forged should be comforting to them, not annoying.

Well, I wouldn't care TOO much about noise, except that it is harder to keep dwarves happy in this version.
They sometimes work to the point of starvation/dehydration, and so get more unhappy thoughts.

My housing complexes are usually on the first rock level below my farms, usually 2zlayers down. Never bothered about noise but all my workshops go deeper.

I haven't had them work to the point of starvation or dehydration a single time yet, though I've only had one fort going for about 3 game years.  They only work to the point of hunger and thirst, and into that for a while, and get some minor bad thoughts from that.  But without doing anything special, they're all content to happy, so...

Keeping your original 7 from getting the negative thoughts is rather easy; in fact, I've found with a little more micromanagement you can easily prevent your non-military dwarves from getting the thoughts at all.

I actually kind of like it as it has added challenge, and increased my influence over the dwarves, often giving me a reason to pay closer attention to an established fortress.
The poor buggers suffer enough at my hand, the least I can do is let them eat or drink when they need to.

As for noise and distance problems; with the new 'dormitory' designation, I just build large towers of heavily decorated dorms near the entrance to the fort while siting the workshops where I need them.
I design and dig/construct a good portion of my fortress before allowing the dwarves to move inside, typically 3-6 years depeding on numbers of migrants (and whatever crazy stuff I find and need to inspect closely).

I found that placing food and drink near work areas alleviates this problem for civilian dwarfs.  But those military dwarfs are another thing entirely...

I make all my forts Modular, with a + shaped frame. Housing goes at the top, industry goes at the bottom, on different levels. Everything else is where ever I think it should go.
