awwwww...crap. One of my oldest soldiers became attached to his wooden training spear. I think it's time for his spear to have an unfortunate accident.
Why on earth would you let him wield one in the first place? They're only useful as danger rooms' spikes.

Because life was safe and happy. I wanted him to spar with a training spear so that he'd actually be of some use once I got round to making him a proper metal one.

If you are using version .16 you don't need training weapons because sparing is 100% safe now even with the most deadly weapons.

In my current fort its the best new feature, as my weaponsmith made an artifact *clownite* longsword, all my dwarf would be dead if sparring werent safe. Im chopping up bodypart even when stabbing!

that was a luky dwarf. I had one dabbling surgeon fail so spectacularly that the patient skull flew a tile away from the table.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Besides... Training is most undwarvenly.

In adventure mode I killed a Hydra within fifteen minutes, and then was mortally wounded by Carp while swimming in a river.

Suddenly I start to wonder, with this new sparring system in place, tapping people all over even with adamantine short swords and causing no injury, what purpose do training weapons even have?

Besides the wooden axes which somehow can be used to chop trees. Even when they only cause bruises at best against real opponents. I have concluded that trees in DF are sissies like elves. Thin and easily struck down.

I've had soldiers get "acquainted" with weapons and items earlier, but I've also noticed that despite that I still could give them something else to use. However, memory fails me on whether or not they got their preferred item back after a while or not.

Also, how much does one need to kill with a weapon in order to name it? And does the same mechanic apply to a shield, or hell, ANY item?

Legendary backpacks of beatdown.

As far as I can tell, training weapons are pointless other than for a danger room.  Maybe sparring will get changed back to needing training weapons in the future but it would just seem pretty fiddley and not fun to be honest.

I'm not sure on the chances of soldiers getting attached or naming weapons but I've had a lot of named weapons once they've got the killing blow on a titan or forgotten beast, sometimes that being the only kill on the weapon, other times much later.  Some have just been after killing a lot of goblins though, 40+.  I've never seen a named shield but dwarves get attached to them as often as weapons it seems, however my military aren't killing anyone with their shields so I guess that's why they aren't getting named.  So basically, to get named weapons kill lots of stuff, the bigger the better.

Last game got me 5 named weapons and shields just by lots of danger room training. A couple of kills was all it took to name an adamantine axe/sword, etc.
Don't remember if the iron shield that was named had any kills..

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

Dwarves can grow attached to items with no kills on them, the amount of time spent wearing/weilding the item before bonding seems to vary widely.  Ive seen anything from 1 to 5 years.

Naming of the item also varies widely, they will only name it after being attached to it, however I have named items with 0 kills so that is not the sole factor if relevant at all.

Ive seen bonding with weapons, shields and armours, so far though i've only seen naming of shields and weapons, might be coincidence.  Anyone had a dwarf dub a piece of armor or clothing?

Training weapons are good for the arena. Capture a gobbo, disarm him and throw your squad of dwarves with training weapons and full armor into a pit with the gobbo. The gobbo will not die, and within a season you'll have Legendary dwarves. In theory it will die EVENTUALLY, but only after losing all of its fingers and toes and facial features and then slowly(!) bleeding to death. Really, the only thing you should be worried about is your dwarves dropping unconscious from exhaustion.
