Buzzards: Macaques of the Skies and other nuisances.
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:49:16 pm »

I started a new fort the other day in a Serene area and the only large animals onscreen was a wake of buzzards. They milled around the screen and were just a general nuisance; my dwarves would occasionally cancel an outside job of them, but nothing too major. If anything was a problem, it was the constant cave-in warnings that I was recieving from underground. I finally had to turn it off in the init file to avoid the constant announcements.

Eventually one of the buzzards wandered too close to a puppy and mauled to death for its trouble. The puppy wasn't even scratched despite the buzzard latching onto it once or twice. So no real issue; I'd move underground soon enough and the job cancellations would stop. Then one of them swooped over the wagon and flew off with an entire stack of plump helmets. That buzzard bastard even flew out over a murky pool to avoid pursuit and quickly made its way offscreen with its precious cargo.

From now on, I think I'm going to include a cheap crossbow and a handful of bolts in my embarks.

How many animals are there that do this sort of thing now?

Oh, buzzards stole all my first fort's food right from the disassembled wagon.  The lucky dwarves starved.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...It should be pretty fun though.

I had buzzards steal nearly all of my food, but managed to get the rest inside.

Now the only thing they steal are my captured two-legged rhino lizards. They leave the trap too. Effective means of getting rid of vermin without those damn cats getting them.

On my first embark on this new version a giant mole burrowed up next to my temporary food store and made off with a barrel of prepared cave spider brains.  I suppose the dwarves probably thanked him for that!

Whoa, for reals? I've yet to see a burrowing animal. That will really mess with my digging and carving and that sort of thing, the aesthetics and all.

(That rock face really tied the room together, man.)

I see absolutely nothing in the raws that would indicate burrowing behavior...  Are you sure it didn't just pop out of a cave entrance or something?

Enh.  That giant mole probably kidnapped itself anyway.

In my first fort, my dogs dealt fairly well with the buzzards. One in particular had a habit of tearing one leg off each buzzard and leaving them to bleed...

Reminds me of my experiences with my current fortress...
in the early summer of the 1st year a bunch (9) of dark gnomes appeared
and before I could react all of my booze (which was around 80 barrels) disappeared in their stomachs.

To hunt them down (killing 6 of them, which made the remaining 3 flee) took 4 of my dwarves another 2  months.

(fortunately I was on a map with water, so that my dwarves could (unhappily) survive by drinking water till the end of fall, when the  dwarven  caravan  arrived  with fresh booze)

I've got a buzzard in a cage trap, I don't seem to be able to tame it though.

You can train it to steal from the Kobold caves.
Take that, thieves.

Trained recovery-buzzards (or lizards, or various other sneaky animals) would be hilariously excellent.

Also no, there are no burrowing creatures yet, so that mole must have gotten to the surface some other way.
