QUICKLY! Decision Time
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:26:10 pm »

So for math tonight I have a lesson involving iterates.
While not hard, it is lots of work.
I do not like work.
I have a get out of homework free card.
Should I go ahead and use it or save it for a hard (hah!) assignment?

What the hell is an iterate?

Also, save it.

You don't know what iterates are?
Iterations.
Find f(x), plug it into f(x), repeat however many times the assignment calls for.

Uh

Okay

That's cool, I guess.  But why the hell would they have you do that?  It makes no sense.

Wikipedia can explain it much better than I.

I guess I have to do it because it's part of the textbook.

No, no.  I understand the concept.  I just don't see why it's considered "a thing to do as special homework."

The whole lesson is called Compositions of Functions.
It covers iterates, f of g, and g of f.

... I think I need to sit down, now.  On the other hand, I'm thinking back to my sophomore year of high school and how much I hated that section of the textbook.

American mathematical education is ludicrous.

I've noticed that I never like the teachers who go with the system. I like the ones who let me do math my way. Proofs are especially difficult, because oftentimes the teacher only knows ONE way to solve it, although there are many.

I say do it. Functions are not that hard, and you will eventually have something much harder, the end of the year and all.

I mean "don't do it" as in "don't use the pass", not "don't do the homework, e.g. use the pass".
