A barrel and a keg give me 2 different mental images.
- Barrels are things to store stuff inside of, that sit in a dusty, lonely, and very silent storeroom on the lower fortress levels.
- A keg on the other hand is the center of a dining hall, where many dwarves can be seen sitting around throwing parties and having drinks from mugs all the time.
... A keg would also be a good place to put most of the mugs and goblets around, or in, too ... The keg could work like a multi-function stockpile/workshop.
Each keg could:
- Be only 1 tile in size. Maybe 3x3... Maybe. It might look weird trying to simulate perspective.
- Store large amounts (500 or more) of a single type of drink. Each time the keg is drunk from, the dwarf will think about how full it is, and be happy/sad about how much is left.
- Possibly slightly unhappy thoughts about there not being a keg with that dwarf's prefered drink in it (or drinking from one that isn't their favorite)
- Claim ownership to various un-owned mugs and cups (up to 20 total) with settings to control which material and what quality they are. Dwarves that have drinking implements are happier then dwarves that do not have them.
- Give a "Fill Keg" job to brewery dwarves to haul barrels of the assigned drink and empty them into the keg (leaving any remainder in the barrel if needed) Possibly also a "Collect mugs and glasses" toggle FOR THAT KEG, which would effect every dwarf with item hauling.
- Dwarves that drink from the keg would treat their mugs (if any) as food, and would sit at a chair or table to drink -- complaining if there isn't a table to put it on, or a chair to sit in.
Kegs would obviously be allowed to store booze, but also milk and water (and syrup if it's allowed to be consumed 'unprocessed') The downsides to the keg is that if it isn't done right and/or isn't maintained, dwarves will become annoyed about all of the small things that are wrong (which add up into a larger situation) As well, putting all that booze into one place can be a big loss -- i can definitely see soldiers stationed next to a fortress' only "cows milk" or "sweet pod rum" keg. Also of course, you need the resources to build it (and space, if it's 3x3)
[Kegs could also play a part in the economy. Dwarves that own mugs and cups would place them in with the keg that has their favorite drink, and then drink only from that keg. Enterprising dwarves could also buy (or rent) their own private keg to throw parties at (like assigning a dwarf a statue) and possibly even charge dwarves money who drink from that keg -- possibly letting friends drink for free! ]
