Actually in df2010  soap is done by "Soap making" (I believe) at the Soap Maker shop.

Seems currently Alchemy is unused, someone made a custom reaction/workshop to do real alchemy.

you know we are gonna have a dwarf give birth to an iron baby... IRON MAN!

HAS HE LOST HIS MIND,
CAN HE SEE OR IS HE BLIND?
CAN HE WALK AT ALL,
OR IF HE MOVED, WOULD HE FALL?

IS HE ALIVE OR DEAD?
HAS HE THOUGHTS WITHIN HIS HEAD?
WE'LL JUST PASS HIM HERE
WHY SHOULD WE EVEN CARE?

No, an "Alchemist's workshop" is a soap maker's workshop.

There seems to be some sort of wide-reaching bug involving iron.  Goblets are turning into iron while being made.  A lot of dwarves are making iron artifacts without picking up any iron at all.  In fact, every time I've heard someone mention an artifact in the new version yet, it seems to be made of iron no matter what dwarf is making it and what materials they picked up.  Instead, the materials they pick up just get used in decorating the artifact.

My 2010 fortress has made 2 artifacts so far and neither contains iron - also there were no iron ores or bars on the map when either was made.  My dwarves made a pig tail fiber short shirt made from three pieces of pig tail cloth during a secretive mood, and a galena cabinet made from three stones of galena ore after a possession.

I had the same thing happen for me. A dwarf, lye maker I think, got a secretive mood, found some bones and made an iron figurine out of them. It's decorated with bone though.

My gem-setter picked up three gems and made a perfect amethyst, decorated with just the two other gems.  No iron.

Ah, I was wondering why when I was trying to craft some golden goblets why they kept coming out as iron.

I've gotten a cassiterite mechanisms with no iron on it at all. And a stone mug. However, I have noticed that all of the silver goblets I've tried making ended up as iron.

Obviously they are making it out of their IRON WILL!!!

It could be worse, they could be making it out of their hearts of gold.
What about their nerves of steel, or - um - toenails of bismuth bronze?
What about their big brass balls? ... What? Didn't you know 'jeu de boule' is the sport of the dwarfs, right after 'elf evisceration' and 'cat slaying'?

Turning Iron into Gold Goblets seems to relatively well known, . . .
What?  I had some Gold Goblets just spontaneously appear, but thought little of it.  Could you give me a link to this?

For artifacts, it's bone. Bone in artifacts as a base material = iron artifacts.  Everything else seems to work fine, but it might just be any 'body part' like a hoof or a shell or whatever as well. Requires testing.

My artifacts get made of all sorts of things though. So far, I've had stone, wooden and cloth ones.
