Invisible molten rock
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:21:05 am »

I just noticed this in my fort.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It appears to be some sort of leftover rock from when I melted down the stone in my tower cap chamber. I tried getting rid of some of it by building over the spots indicated by the stocks menu. I also tried to atom smash them into oblivion but to no avail.

My last option is to reflood the chamber with magma and hopefully the rocks will cook properly this time. I believe this will work as I melted down far more rocks in my magma chamber, including 1000s of microcline. Overall I disposed of approximately 150000 stones in magma.

Questions: Will my final method work? Does the 15000 molten rocks contribute to lag?

In the previous version at least, molten rock was removed on season change. Not sure how that'll be, since corpses don't dissapear on season change currently. As for the lag, maybe, but perhaps not, since nobody will ever want to pick them up for any reason.

It's a known bug which dates back to 0.27/0.28 - when magma flows around, it can push globs of molten stone around, and items that get pushed around frequently become hidden, at which point they no longer interact with the rest of the world (which includes them no longer disappearing during season changes).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Cooking the invisible rocks in magma did not remove them, even after another season change. Encasing them in obsidian had no effect. If the dwarves could handle them, they might be recoverable, but I doubt it. (I once had a mechanism disappear in a channel of water. Later when it was empty, a dwarf came to store it in the stockpile.)
