[DF2010] I need shells!!!

Okay, here's the situation. I've started a new fortress and have been having fun so far, but suddenly, it turns out a dwarf gets a mood and want a shell. I am not very scared as I have plenty of turtles and cave lobsters, but to my great surprise, there were no shells available. No panicking, I forbid all the plants to be eaten and allow only fish. They eat some turtles and cave lobsters, no shell. I decide to prepare those, no shell. I fiddle with the reactions to cheat a shell in, no shell. I try to put a shell on a dog, but obviously the tag doesn't work anymore as I get no shell from the butchering. Note:I've also tried fishing for a new turtle just in case those I brought with me somehow didn't have any shells.

So, for the love of Armok, can anybody tell me if there is any remaining way of obtaining a shell?

Shells are produced now when the fish is prepared for eating, not when it is eaten.  So catching some fresh turtles and preparing them should do it.

If you can't manage to catch any turtles or lobsters, and don't mind cheating, this method works rather nicely.

This didn't work at all, I prepared many turtles to get no shell.

If you can't manage to catch any turtles or lobsters, and don't mind cheating, this method works rather nicely.

I don't mind cheating, but it doesn't work when I try it.

I think you can mod in other things to have shells. You'll need to do this to the target creature [probably, haven't tested this]:

1: Add SHELL to the BODY tag
2: Add the [USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:SHELL:SHELL_TEMPLATE] tag to the [BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:STANDARD_MATERIALS] section
3: Add the [USE_TISSUE_TEMPLATE:SHELL:SHELL_TEMPLATE] tag to the [USE_TISSUE_TEMPLATE:SHELL:SHELL_TEMPLATE] section
4: Add the [BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:SHELL_POSITIONS] tag to the creature.

That should give the target creature a shell, though you'll still have to get the shell through the same way you would otherwise, which is apparently fish cleaning (for vermin-type creatures) or butchery (for larger creatures)

#1 seems to be already done for me, but I might be wrong, from what I checked.

#2 is not a problem, I manage to find the section and add the line.

#3 is a problem... I can find [TISSUE_TEMPLATE:SHELL:SHELL_TEMPLATE], but not [USE_TISSUE_TEMPLATE:SHELL:SHELL_TEMPLATE] which might be the reason why it doesn't work.

#4 is not a problem either, I should have done it right. Copy pasting is not that troublesome. XD

So, what did I do wrong?

EDIT: I was dumb and had a durr moment. Fixed now, thank you!

Shells, along with slade, are the new unobtainium.
Just wall him in. It's the only way.

If you're in the right climate,killing snailmen is quite a fast way of getting shells.

Yeah, the modding trick doesn't work as I tried multiple time with dogs and horses that I then butchered. I think I need a new world gen for this cheat to work.

Anyway, I'll have my 7 elite wrestlers waiting for him at his workshop... I just hope he doesn't start a spiral tantrum. He has a brother, a lover and 2 children... *Crosses fingers.*

"I must have rock bars!"

What exactly is a rock bar? I had plenty of stones and rock blocks...

Same thing happened to me early on in my fort when I didn't have metals churning out all the time, turns out he wanted a metal bar. Not sure why it says rock though.

rock bars could be coal, soap, basically anything that shows up in a bar/block stockpile under "BARS" and not "BARS:METAL" My guess is that he wants coke.

I'm probably too late, but you need to make these raw changes to \Dwarfort\data\save\region1\raw\objects (changes to \Dwarfort\raw\ only affect new worlds)

It's already been reported as a bug multiple times. What I'm saying is, don't report it again.

The "no turtles" bug is fixed for the next version (.31.04), so shells should be obtainable for everyone soon.
