2010 Challange: Deep Dwarves

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The goal is simple, with simple rules.

- No above-ground wood cutting.
- No above-ground trading.
- No above-ground anything. Lock your dwarves deep underground.
- No Stairs. Ramps only. (Additional; Temporary stairs can be made to go down, but ramps must replace them asap).

Basically, as soon as you start, dig down to a cavern and set up a base camp. Expand from there. If you need/want to trade, you will have to build a road down to your base camp's level.
If you need wood, cut down fungiwood and other sorts. You are to live and survive only in this deep cavern, where your dwarves are likely to become cave adapted.

Do your best not to dig too far into the cave's walls (long spiralling corridors) and expand naturally in the nearby walls and open spaces.

==================================
The Next Step

When you've filled the first cavern, dig to another cavern, and make it into a dwarven road (aka, at least 3 squares wide and as straight as you can (Large square-spiral?)).

==================================
 #################################
==================================
For extra bonus...

Start with the following:

Expedition Leader
No Military Dwarves
One Doctor (You'll need him)
- And the rest of your own choosing

==================================

==================================

Good Luck!

The lack of stairs should make fortress design more interesting. I'll have to do that sometime.

Indeed. I think they are more attractive, anyway.

I'm gonna try this. Lets see, better embark with a Woodcutter/Axedwarf, if I can figure out how the military screen even works...

It really is quite easy.... Just remember to when you hit the cavern limit acess to your area and make it so that nothing can PATH into you fortress until you are ready to go out. as long as there is no PATH through your fortress and no PATH INTO your fortress it is quite benign....

You are a lifesaver! Round and probably in tropical flavors.

So basically, just don't start building my fort in a dead end somewhere, not out in the middle of a cavern/hallway, and slowly expand out from there?

I just saw this, it's Brilliant!

I'm going to change one thing. Once I'm stable enough, I'll treat sieges like opportunities for me to raid the surface, a la the Drow.  My spike trapped sneakmurdering trading hall will try to get everyone else into the action too.

Will have a report later tonight.

!!Elves!! would actually be kinda cool as a civ symbol.  !!Clowns!!, however, you get the impression they're on fire of their own free, malicious, evil, will.

Also, much scarier if literally clowns.

Challenge indeed.  I think this is the way the game should be played but have yet to survive to the first caravan trying it.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...It should be pretty fun though.

Already made a strip mine on an above ground fortress using the new channeling. was fun.
edit:
Okay, the first cavern I came to was a lava lake, then soon after I found admantine and couldnt help but want to explore the underworlds.
SILLY ME, EVERYTHINGS DEAD. :)
