DF2010 Military Management
« on: April 05, 2010, 08:57:33 am »

I thought it might be useful for everyone to list how they manage their military, and what advices they can give each other.

I, for instance, would like to advice that you do your absolute best to check whether you have your dwarfs swap from their training weapons before sending them into battle: Two of my dwarfs will probably never recover because of me forgetting to re-equip them.

Just one thing:

''T'' to activate a squad. Took me long enough to figure it out.

You could start a zoo and end up with a natural history museum, I'm sure no one would mind.

But how do I do this? I have a squad with two dwarves. When I look in the military screen, I don't find any options to activate something with "T" :(

I assume he means the Squad  menu:
s --> Squads menu

then select squad (a,b,c or whatever)
and then press t  for "active"

That's it!

Thank you!

I found another problem then. In order to attack ice wolves, I put every dwarf in the military. After killing the wolves, some of them are 'recruits' now and dont seem to do their old job again. Is it possible to return them to normal? :o

For me, military menu, cancel kill order fixes this.

It seems that the order to kill whatever doesn't end just cause the target's dead.  Your earnest squad stands guard over the spot where the kill happened, ready and willing should the revenant rise and seek revenge.

My biggest military problem so far is getting archers to actually use bolts instead of clubbing the enemy with thier crossbow. I have ammunition assigned, they have quivers, the quivers are full of bolts, and yet when a thief popped up, the crossbowdwarves clubbed him to death and never fired a shot. Now, I do have wooden bolts assigned to training and metal bolts assigned to combat, and they were interrupted during training; maybe the problem is that intercepting the thief was an automatic combat order so they couldn't use training ammunition?

Do they have any talent at archery?

That sounds like they were happily obeying their material orders, yes.

Might want to have wooden bolts set to both training and combat.

I was about to headdesk for being so dumb, when I noticed this is the exact same thing as changing their alert status in the alert screen....

... so my problems with the military are not fixed. It's not the interface that's bugging me, it's the military not acting like they're supposed to, which is a bug I assume...

Take a look here. Might be able to help.

Also, for reference, "press t in squad screens" is not "how to activate them" like is being propogated incorrectly on the forums. 't' simply cycles between a squad's alerts, by which are the unchangeable 'Inactive' and the editable 'Active/Training' by default.

One of them does, at Competent.

That sounds like they were happily obeying their material orders, yes.

Might want to have wooden bolts set to both training and combat.

I'll try that and see what happens. It's likely to take me a few more encounters before I get all the kinks worked out, once I'm able to get back to the game.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't one of the new features the ability for them to auto swap weapons (aka recognizing combat and training weapons)
