Getting Fire Imps to breed, AFTER embark. (40d)

I have a fortress that I don't really want to give up, but I found that I forgot to remove the [NO_GENDER] tag from my fire imps beforehand (I'm trying to get them to breed).  I just removed it, and looking around they're still genderless.  Is there any way to get them to start breeding without starting a new fort?

EDIT:  This is still in 40d

So of all the things you can do in DF, it's the fractal artifacts that make you think dwarves are crazy.

Never mind the magma falls, the atom smashers, the cog-and-axle turing-complete computers, or the colonizing of Hell itself... all those are fine, but man, those recursive artifacts! Where do they get such ideas?

I do believe that not even restarting your fort would help; you will need to regen.
