(DF2010) Dwarven Baby cancels Clean Self: Too insane
« on: April 04, 2010, 03:02:03 pm »

I am currently being spammed with this message. The baby in question currently has some vomit on him, as well as some dwarf blood from another dwarf on it's broken right wrist.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

That's why babies don't clean themselves in real life, you know.

I had the same problem after a baby dwarf was wounded (I assume it got some blood on it).

Only in Dwarf Fortress could you get 4 armed heads scuttling about on cavern roofs.

I think this is caused by the 'mood' babies have that keeps them in their mothers' arms without falling. Also, in Dwarf Companion there is an option to give a dwarf a fey/secretive/possessed/fell mood, but also included the various form of insanity, one of which was called staring/baby.

Yes, babies must outgrow their insanity before they can clean themselves.

Obviously, the parents need to clean them.

this is reported on the bug tracker. This is actually one of my favorite bugs, it makes me laugh, a lot.

this has been verified to happen with ...
adults
babies
cats (possibly only if you mod soap into bars).

Cats are my favorite. ;P

I've got a cat who wanders around the fortress carrying dog soap.  Presumably it's the source of all the "cat cancels Clean:  cannot reach self" errors I've been getting.  Also have the insane baby notice :(  Poor dirty, crazy baby.

Get the child's parent to stand under falling water; I planned on stationing mine under my waterfall in my dining room, but she got around to it herself. Or possibly the Chief Medical Dwarf cleaned the baby while the mother was laid up in the hospital but this seems unlikely...

As for animals, I pit them into my waterfall's drainage tunnels, instantly cleaning them in the water there. Unfortunately this doesn't work for adopted pets. Not much to be done about that but hope the animal crosses under some water: it will then stop trying to clean itself and drop the soap.

Can also forbid soap once your hospital has as much as it needs stocked, and unforbid when it needs more. Babies will still spam their insanity but keeps animals from trying to use soap, at least.
