SanDiego's great arena experiments - taking suggestions
« on: April 04, 2010, 08:24:18 am »

Being a bit bored I decided to run severa experiments in arena. Taking suggestions on experiment #4.

Experiment #1
Pit a slade-clad swordsdwarf against several dozen naked elves skilled in marital arts and see how may will come out alive.
Result: to my surprise, superdwarf managed to kill off just some fifteen elves before suffocating due to several elves strangling him.
Tried to clean after ecperiment using a dragon. After twenty dead elves dragon was strangled to death, forty elves still remain alive. Spawned magma man to take care of the rest and rung experiment #2.

Experiment #2
Pit a magma man against blizzard man.
Result: long and tedious wrestling match. Abrubtly cut short by starting of experiment #3.

Experiment #3
Why aren't Bronze collosi armed. First, I pit bronze colossus armed with slade great axe against already wrestling magma man and blizzard man. Both are disposed off.
My experimantal colossus is still alive after surviving 78 cave swallow men, 120 elves, 7 dragons and one bronze colossus. Meanwhile I have some wrestling colossi slaughtering sea monster just by the way. Colossi still seem to be quite unable to defeat each other unless armed/supported by flock of dragons.
Correction to previous statements - after battling hordes of dragons while fending off another colossus my pet colossus is somewhat melted and slightly damaged. Still alive and kicking though.
Now, I pit 20 fire imps against the already damaged pet colossus. All imps are swiftly struck down. Apart of being caught in clouds of boiling elf blood (there is plenty of it around) colossus sustained no damage. Gobbo's next. Armed.
40 gobbo's, medium skill, steel scourges. Let's see. Goblins are being struck down one by one, still seem inable to damage colossus. Meanwhile, in water arena pieces of sea monsters and bronze keep flying around.
Much to my annoyance he didn'budge even after I added two dragons to fight. It just finished remaining gobbo's and colossus killed off the remaining. I will keep pitting dragons against him to see how much can he take (he is already heavily damaged).
Allright, after fighting 78 cave swallow men, 120 elves, one bronze colossus, 20 fire imps, 40 goblins and 15 dragons my axe armed colossus finally died. That's why we do not have armed colossi running around.

A few suggestions;

- placing creatures above created magma above water creates a neat almost cinematic effect, where the creatures either end up encased in cooled magma above the lake, or fighting while the steam clears on the newly formed obsidian-cast island.(finding a decent application for it in fort mode would be awesome!)

-Extensive testing of all genders to see if there are any differences in combat capabilities, despite what the raws say.

-testing if you can "dampen" a body of water with bodies

-Testing fall damage for various critters, including the test if something does damage falling ONTO another critter, then see if weight/material factors into it etc.(tons of real fort applications)

Keep up the good work!

Experiment #4 - fight between equally (un)skilled and (un)equipped specimen of the same race and different gender.
Run 1 - Mr. Dwarf vs. Ms. Dwarf. So far, both appear to fight equally ferociously, but Ms. Dwarf is pretty roughed up, much worse than Mr. Dwarf, she even has some organ damage. It seems that Ms. Dwarf has her skills a little higher than her comrade.
A bit later, Ms. Dwarf is lying unconcious on ground and Mr. Dwarf keeps wrestling her. Only undamaged part of her body is right hand. She died shortly after I wrote this. Second fight was even faster, Mr. Dwarf also won, sustaining rather spectacular set of minor injuries, just as his predecessor.
Third fight won by Ms. Dwarf, sustaining a set of minor injuries. I will make another three fights.
So, out of six fights, excactly half was won by Ms. Dwarf and half by Mr. Dwarf. Both seem to fight equally furiously as survivors rarely had a part of their bodies which took no damage. Will try the same for Dragons.

Run 2 - Mr. Dragon vs. Ms. Dragon (6x)
Fights are difficult to watch because corpses are nowhere nearly as incombustible as dragons are. Dragons seem to sustain much more terrible injuries than dwarves do, but I guess that's natural.
Five out of six fight have been won by Mr. Dragon. This seems strange to me, as they both seemed to fight equally. I will have a round of dropping them from height seeing who dies first.
Okay, dropping dragons 5 z-levels proved they both last the same. If they do not splat in pool of their own blood immediately, they die within seconds after impact. Dropping dwarves yielded no different results with one notable exception of Dwarf 22 who survived fall that immediately killed mature dragons and is still alive and kicking quite a while after it. Finally, I put him out of his misery by encasing him in obsidian.

Conclusion: we can say that both genders are equal. What is more interesting - average dwarf splats over same area as average dragon does.

Hey, why don't you test GCSs versus random animalmen with wood spears, bucklers and blowguns w/ ammo?

Lethality of spears... interesting. Maybe I will try out several types of weapons when I'm in it.

Yeah, I tried, I dropped one dwar atop another some 5 z-levels and for a good measure I dropped a gorilla on them, but they seemed quite OK. I will make more extensive tests though.

Was there any damage, at all?

The gorilla surely made a nice splat, but dwarves seemed content to me. I will make better research (drop anything from carp to bronze colossus).

Oh, self-necro, that is a little something like self-satisfying...

Anyway, I finished my experiments on topic "Does falling critter damage those who are beneath?" and I can pretty safely say that the answer is no. In final stages I dropped a bronze collosus on naked dwarf, who sustained no damage bar being pushed aside a few tiles. So, yes, falling critters do push others aside but they do not damage them the slightest. Nor does a body of a critter dampen/amplify damage of the falling one. So, sorry, no bronze collosus dropping traps.
