5 macedwarfs (full iron armor), 4 axedwarfs (full iron armor) and 4 crossbow dwarfs (full leather + quivers + ammo)  were defending my fortress against 6 goblins... and they lost miserably.
No goblins died, all of my dwarfs did.
I'm not even mentioning crossbowdwarfs unable to shoot.

Is the military so weak or what? Should I make every dwarf in my fortress a soldier and give them a weapon and armor in case 10 goblins show up?

Are you absolutely sure that they are fully equipped?  Did you check their individual inventory to see if their aren't holding multiple shields and/or weapons?  This may or may not cause the problem.  Make sure in the squad equipment screen, that you set each dwarf to "replace clothing" instead of "over clothing", so they take off all equipment and equip ONLY what is given, instead of constantly piling it up.

Yes I both checked them individually and had the replace clothing on.

Then it is probably still buggy.  I was once, and only once, somehow able to get one of my marksdwarves to fire at an random mountain goat.  But I have no idea how or when it happened.  I only noticed that it happened when I was reviewing battle reports, where it showed that a mountain goat was shot by a bolt.

Meh.. going back to 40d until this is fixed... too frustrating to spend many hours on fortress and then get it destroyed because my military is a joke.

My military (9 dwarves, random iron weaponry) defeated an ambush of about 6 goblins. It was no longer a complete slaughter like in the older versions. There was still limbs and blood flying, but it took quite a bit longer to terminate the goblins' sad existence.

I just loaded some save and tried to kill a horse.
I think they were bashing him with maces for good 10 days before he died.

Check their equipment and make sure they are not holding practice weapons. For me they held practice weapons in one hand and their iron weapons in the other, only attacking with the training weapons for some reason.

My legendary miner was just ambushed by gobbos, i drafted him in his own squad, selected 'individual weapon' in equipment, and ordered to fight back.
He digged through that gobbos squad as fast as through sand, nearly unscratched himself (and he had no armor, just a bronze pick).

So its a matter of skills, stats and weap/armour, i guess. I've heard bronze is more powerful than iron now, for example.

Yeah, it seems like unknown features determine combat right now. It'll probably be fixed soon.

I had an adventurer walk into a gobbo fortress and absolutely kill everyone, including generals, pikemen, swordsmen, etc. The only injuries she suffered were a busted toe and a bruised chest.

Even the giant mahagony demon did all of nothing whatsoever.

In version 31, weapons have great difficulty KILLING things, but they can beat the snot of out them and leave them a quivering mass of broken bones.

Iron is inferior to bronze but my miners could kill elephants with even copper picks and other weapons were effective as well.

Why would you want them to remove clothing?  Doesn't clothing add another protective layer under the armor?  Shouldn't you want as many layers as possible?

One dwarf with 5 iron armors and shields when other dwarfs are naked isn't doing any good.

Also yeah, one skilled miner is more powerful than a squad of macedwarfs.

Ive also noticed armour is alot more effective in the current version, you might be having trouble getting through their armour, ive had hundreds of shots bounce of my dwarves.
