Atlantis PBeM - Thanks to Qwerty! (if it works)
« on: April 04, 2010, 01:19:32 am »

I am looking to see how many players would be interested in playing Atlantis, a Play By Email game.
It's a complex MMO that takes place in a fantasy setting.

It has tons of things you can do, for example:

   1. Instant orders.
          * TURN orders are processed.
          * FORM orders are processed.
          * ADDRESS, AUTOTAX, AVOID, BEHIND, CLAIM, COMBAT, CONSUME, DECLARE, DESCRIBE, FACTION, GUARD 0, HOLD, NAME, NOAID, OPTION, PASSWORD, REVEAL, SHOW, and SPOILS orders are processed.
          * FIND orders are processed.
          * LEAVE orders are processed.
          * ENTER orders are processed.
          * PROMOTE orders are processed.
   2. Combat is processed.
          * ATTACK orders are processed.
   3. Steal orders.
          * STEAL and ASSASSINATE orders are processed.
   4. Give orders.
          * DESTROY and GIVE orders are processed.
          * EXCHANGE orders are processed.
   5. Tax orders.
          * PILLAGE orders are processed.
          * TAX orders are processed.
   6. Instant Magic
          * Old spells are cancelled.
          * Spells are CAST (except for Teleportation spells).
   7. Market orders.
          * GUARD 1 orders are processed.
          * SELL orders are processed.
          * BUY orders are processed.
          * QUIT and RESTART orders are processed.
          * FORGET orders are processed.
   8. Movement orders.
          * SAIL orders are processed.
          * ADVANCE and MOVE orders are processed (including any combat resulting from these orders).
   9. Month long orders.
          * BUILD, ENTERTAIN, PRODUCE, STUDY, TEACH, and WORK orders are processed.
          * Costs associated with these orders (such as study fees) are collected.
  10. Teleportation spells are CAST.
  11. Maintenance costs are assessed.

There are no goals, players can do whatever they want. Trade, dominate, study, teach.

If anyone is interested in playing, a whole guide is here:
http://atlantis.phantasia.org/Atlantis4-test/standard_rules.html

I'll host a server if I get enough interested.

Oh man.  This makes me realize how much I would kill for an Erfworld-themed PBEM wargame.

Haha, Erfworld is awesome.

So nobody would be intereested in having epic wars with other bay12ers?

EDIT: This is open source...maybe an erfworld ruleset is in order...

REEDIT: It's in hexes too...I'll be posting at the erfworld forums later today.

Gah! I keep getting compile errors. Now it actually attempts to compile the program, but I get a million warnings about depreciated conversions and eventually a mysterious, non-helpful

make: *** [obj/faction.h] Error 1

Could the code file itself be throwing an error(since there is, I think, a preprocessor command to cause errors and warnings...)?

Hmm...I don't think so.
It always gives me an error 1, and I've fixed it twice.

once I had to make a directory where it wanted to put the files.
the second time I had to move where a variable was declared (it was getting errors because it wasn't declared before it was used).

Now it doesn't even give me a line or anything. Just says Error 1.

If you want to try and compile it yourself, it can be downloaded here: http://www.prankster.com/project/download/download.htm

Oh. You have to make a directory called 'obj'. Make can't make directories, so when it can't find a directory it's telling a file to be put into, it yells at you.

Although, the code breaks elsewhere as well.

EDIT: After slogging through a little bit of it, I'm beginning to think that the programmers have some sort of compiler configuration which is different from the standard setup.

Quite possibly.
I've found that another site has continued the work on Atlantis, so I'm going to download it from there and see if it works.

I've never tried compiling Atlantis, but the error you're receiving occurs when a command executed by 'make' returns with a non-zero value. In this case, that means you're compiler suffered a critical error and closed - but this is just 'make' reiterating the fact that there's an issue. 'Make' cannot actually tell what the error is - all 'make' was told is that the program you told it to execute returned a non-zero value. (You can test it yourself - write 'Hello world', have it return 42, and then execute it via a makefile  ;) )

If you're getting other compiler errors, then the issue is buried somewhere in there. If not, there's some strange stuff happening somewhere.  ???

1. ./configure test failed, check .log for stderr out 2. make is silent, run make as make V=1 3. g++ is not called with -Wfatal-errors, scroll up for first error.
