If you pick up the mud in the muddy water, you can get clean water from said tile

He's not actually drowning, if you have a high level of swimming, it'll say that you're drowning, if there's no air pockets, but your adventurer is really just holding his breath, and the higher your swimming stat is, the longer they hold their breath for, or so I've seen. I can't confirm that yet, but it seems likely.

Toughness -> How long you can hold your breath(counts when being strangled/suffocated too)
Swimming skill -> How fast you can swim in water -> Cover more tiles in less time
So high toughness + fast swimmer = go more tiles before running out of breath and suffocating.

I found a GCS on layer one. My Dwarfy-dex says: "A large underground monster with eight legs and sharp, venomous teeth."

EDIT: After swimming around I encountered three things: A Cave Crocodile, a pack of Pond Grabbers, and a Giant Toad. The toad's Dwarfy-dex entry was: "A giant amphibian predator found underground."

I didn't scan the Croc, but the Pond Grabbers one mentioned clawed tentacles or something similar.

Well, you know how if you take your thumb and forefinger and hold them up to your eye, you can make it look like you're squishing someone's head? It's like that, only for real.

Spartan: Sorry for not adding them earlier, I had other things to attend to. They're there now.

Pkassad: Where did you melt? People randomly melt all over the place, could be the temperature, disease, and other things. So, I don't really have an answer.

Well, due to the fact that there's a massive Lava Sea under the earth, It would sometimes heat up the water, causing a boiling effect.. Or something. It's probably just the heat, or a bug. I dunno.

How long does it usually take you to find these underground passages to level 2? The deepest I've gotten is to Z-level -9. Are these passages found on random z-levels? Or do you need to hit the bottom of underground level 1 before you can find one of those passages?

Found some more Pond Grabbers.

"A small creature that lives in watery ditches deep underground. It has a sharp beak and four tentacles with claws at the end."

They have nearly no blood. One artery severed and they almost always bled to death immediately. They don't move or fight either, but if your weapon gets lodged in they'll take it out. And let you have it back.

I'd love to do this, but it seems to me that my world has maybe three caves total. At least on this continent. I can locate them on the travel map, but when I visit the site I can't find the entrance anywhere. Help?
