The least you could have done was throw down some booze and seasoning. Abyssal Monsters that Creatures of the Light Know Not Of aren't savages, y'know. Sharing's caring.

I can't go any farther. If I try to sleep, he dies of infection.

If I try to go down farther he dies from:

Damn. I think it may just be time to start a fortress and help with most of the traveling down there.

Udda Lalgeihil had 243 kills total, in his trip through the underground. I salute him. -Salutes-

Doesn't the direction box in the upper left corner help finding the exit? Just look for the closest cave and get to levels just below ground, you'll find the way out eventually. At least I was able to do that with no problems.

EDIT: On the other hand, I wasn't going too deep, just exploring the first layer, however very extensively.

Well, I may have just genned a bastard world, but in my cavern system you couldn't just try to go up levels. You basically had to keep going and hope it was possible to go up. There wasn't always a way up unless you managed to backtrack. I just gave up hope of getting back to the surface.

So, I tediously awaited the arrival of the dwarven caravan (I'm set up on a island, see)... And, they came. My fingers tingled, my nose twitched and my toes tickled... they came around the corner, over my bridge... Into my courtyard... Onto my trade depot...

Then everything near it exploded in a cloud of blood.

Unfortunately, I doubt they'd bother coming to the surface. Lazy bastards.

Hmmmm... there must be a way to draw them out...

I guess only fortresses can do it, and so Adventuerers are forced into ending the age of myths themselves BY ENDING THE TYRANNY OF THE IMMORTALS!

I doubt I could've unlocked them, or outrun them. I died from infection.

I'd preferably try to kill all of the magical creatures.

You have to draw a map as you progress. This will be the first thing I do as soon as I get a working computer and a copy of DF2010

What about marking the path out with something?

Wouldn't really work.  The darkness reclaims the path you have taken if you wander very far from the cave entrance tile.  Bodies rot and get moved.

Item locations wouldn't persists between save/loads.

Unless I am missing something.

Pencilinhand is right. Besides, sometimes to get deeper, you'll need to jump off a few short cliffs, so it wouldn't be possible to return back up to the surface.

I had to go down into a cave to find a dragon for my quest, I got lost and have been wandering for the last hour.  What are the chances I will ever manage to escape...

If you haven't been making a map, virtually zero. Might as well just push downward and go down in a blaze of glory/a pitiful whimper of starvation.
