Fire men
« on: April 03, 2010, 01:48:06 pm »

Not sure if this a feature or a bug, but Fire Men are the suicide bombers of DF.

The thing is, they are weak and pretty much useless. They will die to a few hits and do almost no damage with their usual attacks from my tests in Arena.
HOMEVER they can be incredibly dangerous, since if you deal even the minorest of damage to a firemans body, you seem to "break away flames". This causes the fireman to release a burst of fireman flames, which promptly incinerate and melt every living being a few tiles away. Theres no escape. It seems that you are caught in the "explosion", you will bleed to death.
Also, im not sure but it might be that all damage to fireman triggers this effect.
Funnily enough, firemans still usually die either in one hit or atleast the next before their victim(s) have melted to death.

Tested this out with 200 elves clad in full adamantine armor with all skills in grandmaster and a single fireman. After repeated tries, the conclusion is that usually some 20 elves survive the blast caused by dogpiling the fireman.
And even then its those who were too slow.

I guess this would be "Too hardcore effect, too weak mob"

And them punching people results in:
Fireman 1 Punches You, but the blow passes right through!
or something. It deals no damage whatsoever.

Hmm, should be fine if you have crossbow dwarves taking them down selectively when they show up.

What if they are dropped from great heights? Do they just explode as they smash the ground?
Now that it comes to mind, they could be excellent bombs in traps!

This thread has made me imagine them as gas balloons. Being pelted by a harmless soft balloon but woe ye who punctures it.

Now ive got to try that. Hot damn.

Edit: Made a quick test in Arena. They DO explode when dropped!

Edit2: But the explosion actually seems to be quite alot less dangerous to anything... larger. Like elephants.

*Imagines*
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Still if you use a whale it might not feel the need to leave the magma, thus making them hard to catch.
