Prep for surgery! stat!
« on: April 03, 2010, 01:40:40 pm »

Has anyone actually gotten their surgeons to actually do anything outside washing the patients? i've had one dwarf bedridden for almost a year now with a doctor looming above him, using the surgery skill.. but nothing appears to be happening.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

I have watched my doc clean/bandage/suture/do surgery on one dwarf (who died of an infection that came back :-/)

And the same doc went to the guy next door and clean/bandage/suture/do surgery/add 2 splints, and that guy was up about 2-3 months after being wounded and perfectly functional.

Makes sense to me. The dead guy probably wasn't as awesome as the living guy.

You can't trust dwarven health insurance. My uncle urist was insured, paying his premiums like clockwork, but that didn't help him at all. When a zombie bear took both his legs and he needed surgery, the insurance company ignored his letters. He sent a friend to the insurance company's headquarters to argue his case, but the place turned out to be a smoking ruin because some clown had sunk a shaft too deep and opened up the depths of hell.

It seems that surgery and putting patients into traction due to broken bones doesn't work right now.

My doc has worked himself to near death trying to perform surgery on a dwarf. Luckily he died before the doc did.
Same with putting another dwarf in traction. Luckily the dwarf healed enough to walk around again before the doc died.

Everything else works though. He has sutured and dressed a few wounds and cleaned himself and the patient.

Because health insurance reform isn't done yet and neither is DF's medical interface?

You should all know better than to talk politics on the Interwubs.

I have changed the original post. A flame war is still inevitable, but it likely would happen if I had a picture of dancing kittens that were not on fire.

I had two dwarves get injured by a troll.  Red Wrists, ankles, and hips.  The doctor eventually got to them and did the following once I had thread: suture the wounds with thread, set the bones, and dress the wound with cloth.  I didn't have any soap or plaster.  It worked exactly as I'd expect it to.   Maybe because they didn't need to be in traction or immobilized?

The powder is used to make casts.

Powder is made from a few specific varieties of stone. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is gypsum.
