Flexible Interface Mod Concept
« on: April 03, 2010, 01:11:01 pm »

I'm betting this isn't the first time this idea has come up, but I'd just like to put this out there and get reactions.

One of the reasons that interface modding has been so terrible is because of the complexity and unintended consequences of altering the code, right?  So what if we combine what we already have?

  • AutoHotkey
  • A set list of DF default keybindings
  • Coding knowledge to create external applications

A program could be made to work with a set of AutoHotkey scripts to interact with the in-game menus.  Enter a menu in DF, select it in the interface addon, make all of your orders, finish, and watch as the addon switches focus back to the DF window and executes everything by kicking off AutoHotkey scripts.  Profiles could be stored to remember information between sessions.  Imagine setting up military orders with this....

And if anything changes in the DF interface between versions, the key scripts and the addon would just have to change for the new key arrangements.

Is it crazy?
