what i did was digging up and down staircases downwards.. at tone time i hit a cavern and all i did was to build another up/down staircase UNDER the latest one (b-C-x) and the mason came around and did it..!

Building stairs downwards doesn't sound physically possible.

Further proof that dwarves laugh in the face of physics.

It's a stand in for rope ladders that lots of people requested... the plan was you could build and drop a multi-Z-level rope and climb down it but it turned out to tricky to stop animals using it so Toady just let stairs be built from above.

01/23/2010: For rope ladders/etc., I didn't want to tackle the two big issues there (pathing and multi-z buildings), so I went ahead with the quick fix, which is allowing you to build stairs most places, including down into an open area. When I get around to the proper solution, that ability will likely be removed.

It would be possible with the right techniques. You just need some harness or scaffolding to hold the blocks in place while you're placing rivets or nails that keep them togheter. Then apply a copious amount of cement and move on to the next level

And you expect dwarves to do that without killing themselves?
