Dwarves not using seeds..... lolwut?
« on: April 03, 2010, 10:32:06 am »

Kind of new to DF (Especially 2010), and I think I'm doing something wrong. My dwarves won't plant seeds or brew drinks. It keeps telling me that I have "No distillable items." I've irrigated the farm plot, but they still won't plant. I checked my stockpile, and I apparently have a barrel FULL of seeds. My dwarves won't use them. Please, O mighty dwarven masters, tell me how to attain sustenance and drink for my humble band of dwarves.

If you have setup the plot right. Press q then highlight the plot, you have to select what to grow before they will plant. If you have already done that then make sure someone has the Farming Fields labor on.

If not then not sure, i had a problem that just one square of a plot i designated wasn't muddy and that stopped it working so check carefully.

What about the distillery claiming there are no distillable items? Plump helmet spawn is distillable isn't it?

no, you're thinking plump helments, not the seeds

No PHSpawn isn't distillable. You'd need to muddy the ground below ground, build I farm, and set it to grow PHs

Press V, select a Dorf, press P, then L, and then find farming, and press Enter.

We had this problem when a field was designated, then muddied; whereas if you muddied, THEN built the field, everthing went ok. (indoors, sand)

Well, turned the culprit was one un-muddied tile. Thanks for all the help, I would've gone crazy trying to figure this out. May your beards grow long.

So just putting a farm plot on a loamy underground floor doesn't do it anymore? What exactly do I need to do to get the ground suitable for planting?

You need to muddy it.

mmk, so I've designated the farm plot as an activity zone but I cant pit/pond it? In the version I've been playing I've never had to muddy anything, loam was fine. How exactly do I manage that?

Pit/pond zones can only be designated on open space. Or you could make a tunnel from a murky pool or river.

hmmm, crap. Ok that'll take some doing then, my fields are several levels up from the main body of my fort and I don't wanna flood the place by accident.

Dig into the caverns. They're filled with mud (and deadly creatures).
