Marksdwarves not working?
« on: April 03, 2010, 01:22:18 am »

Has anybody successfully got their marksdwarves to not only train/shoot at archery targets, but to also shoot at enemies?  All mine ever do is stand around waiting for combat demonstrations, and will always club the enemies.

I've set up all the necessary requirements, with setting a barracks, and setting the squad to train there, setting up their schedule to train, also putting their alert to train, made sure they had ammunition/quivers/crossbows currently equipped and on hand, and also allowed them to use the ammunition in both training and combat.  But it still doesn't seem to work.  So I'm just wondering if anyone else was able to successfully get this to work;  or is ranged combat broken for them for some reason?  (FYI- i DO know for a fact that there is still ranged combat, due to having my dwarves turned into pincushions by various goblins, some using blowdarts, and some using bows.)

-EDIT-
You can post your own experiences or any info you know about this "problem".  I would appreciate it, as well as others I'm sure.  My defenses in past versions solely relied on my marksdwarves.  Now I have to come up with something completely new untill we can figure out what the problem is.

Yeah I have this problem too. A marksdwarf had a quiver, 33 iron bolts and an iron crossbow, they were set to be used in combat in the m-f screen, but he still tried to club thieves.

Same thing happens for me. A dwarf with a crossbow, a quiver, and bolts in the quiver will not shoot. They run after enemies when in combat (and I'm not even sure they are clubbing them, I think they do wrestling instead, but I can't verify that). Also, they only do wrestling drills for training. The squad is set to use bolts in the ammunition screen, and the bolts are set to be used in both combat and training. I've read all the military guides and threads I could find and done a lot of experimenting with squad options and barracks/archery target setups, but still nothing.

In the military screen, that squad is listed as having "4/10 Marksdwarves", which is correct, but when I select each individual dwarf, they all say "Not Marksdwarf" which is not correct. The squad leader is proficient in marksdwarf (started off that way, hasn't shot one bolt the entire time). I don't know if this is related or not, but thought I'd mention it.

I'd love to hear from someone who has gotten marksdwarfs working so I could figure out whether this is due to a bug or just incomplete knowledge of the new system.

On the plus side, I really like how they can stack stacks of bolts inside a quiver now. No more running around with only five bolts (or one bolt).

Same Here. Mine doesn't even pick up the bolts and doesn't train. I can't really enjoy this game to full without having adorable fully automatic crossbows.

I have all the problems that are listed here, and my marksdwarves aren't training, despite the abundance of crossbows and bolts.

Hehe, tell me about it.  I'm currently being seiged by 50+goblins and trolls. I'm watching them surround my moat and castle.  I've got all my marksdwarves on the z-lvl above them, standing behind the castles fortifications, and they aren't doing ANYTHING.  My only defense seems to be the countless traps I've laid out, seeing as my melee dwarves suck.  I did a trial run where I sent all my melee soldiers at the invading horde.  My dwarves were fully equiped, and many had decent amount of skill, all of which is better than the besieging goblins.  Yet, all my melee dwarves got wiped out, none of them were wrestlers btw.  Only 10 of the 50+ goblins were killed, while all 30 of my dwarves died.  Somehow I feel that something is wrong about that.  Without a proper defense of my marksdwarves, I'm forced to completely close off my fortress from the world. (aka pull up the drawbridge and never let it down.)

Hehe, I wouldn't be surprised if they were.  It would explain an awful lot.

hun o_O wonder what happened there... looks like we'll be testing which weapons are best all over again. But I think there MUST be something screwed up with the way ammo and stuff works.

I just noticed another oddity.  Apparently my dwarves decided it would be ok to equip multiple shields and weapons.  However, but changing each individual dwarf to replace clothing instead of over clothing in the equipment screen of the squad menu eventually fixes this problem.  This may or may not fix the problem I've been having with the marksdwarves, will post back if it does.
