Do... dwarves... dissolve in water?
« on: April 03, 2010, 12:09:05 am »

SO yeah... I was playing around in adventure mood... and I had done a lot of fighting.. actually got up to legendary thrower (but I always do that). Killed a few dozen evil humans.. and countless animals. I lasted a Loooong time. But.. they way I died kinda bugs me...

I saw an island out in the ocean.. and I wanted to see if I could swim to it. Sure enough I got there no problem... so I wondered around it a lil bit... and decided to go back to the main land.

About half way there... I got a really weird message...

I was melting o.o

I ended up bleeding/melting to death. I don't Know how I melted in the ocean... any body have any idea how this could have happened?

Some people have this problem in fortress mode, too. Their upper bodies just melt off in the rain. Is quite disturbing. Doesn't seem to be very universal, or it's a very slow melt.

You were probably swimming through a "scorching" biome, or a hot/warm/temperate biome when it was scorching. Turning off the the temp in the init file will fix this.

Correct me if I'm wrong - the temperature resistances of tissues are a bit buggy right now, warm water will record as scorching and hurt you if you stay in it for too long; on the other hand, submerging yourself into magma will not kill you outright, but rather lead to very slow and painful death.

I had a miner who fell into some lava, but he seemed to die in the same way that acid rain'd dwarfs do.

My guess is that its probably a bug... I'm gonna turn on temperature now and see what that does.

My miner who happened to, ehm... explore the magma lakes, fell in because he's to dumb to dig a channel safely from above. He took almost no damage, wasn't even on fire, but seemed to drown. He died with the message "...has suffocated" after relatively short time. So maybe his lungs burned away or something... anyway, all magma deaths in my fort so far have been way to slow. A good swimmer could probably make it through a few tiles of magma without taking  too much damage  >:(

But my good sir, the second death was for Dwarven Science!

Sounds like you've got temp turned off.  Some people have been having strange things happen in the init, it might be worth checking.

Listen to what your character is saying - it'll probably resemble "Oh, what a world, what a world!"

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
