He got caught in a cave-in and died of an infection a few months later.  He was also my broker/record keeper.  Problem is now I can't seem to set a new one.  In fact, I can't assign any noble positions now.  I hit "n" and the screen is completely blank.  I assumed it would assign a new leader for me, but it's already been nearly a year and no luck.  Now I want to get my military running, and I can't assign a militia commander, so I'm stuck.  Any ideas, or is this a bug?

I have exactly the same story. The only one left in 'n' screen was the militia commander, and he was dead and I couldn't replace him. I'm starting a new fort, although it's partially that and partially that I lost 3/4s of my population to the first goblin invasion...
