Where are the kobolds and animal people in DF2010?
« on: April 02, 2010, 10:49:46 pm »

They don't show up in legends, and I can't play as kobolds from the adventurer race selection screen. All I did was give kobolds [INTELLIGENT] while removing [CAN_LEARN].

Not sure about kobolds, but (some at least) the animal-men seem to live underground now.  In my last fort they showed up suddenly in my civ screen after I discovered the caverns under my fort. Lizardmen are quite vicious when armed.

....They just refuse to stay down unless butchered, in which case their skins will haunt you until you subdue and tan them. Never has legendary butcher and legendary tanner seemed so valueable as in this release.

Found kobolds in legends. I haven't seen any outside there yet, but I guess they're out there somewhere. Now that regular caves are gone, I wonder if they're living in the underground or if they have camps.

I've had a group of snailmen living outside my fort since day 1.  Seem pretty harmless, they usually run when a dwarf gets too close.

Then goblins happened.

Now while everyone is still battling a giant eagle decided to appear out of nowhere.

Also, I uncovered a cavern. It seems to boost wealth and space up enough to trigger a lot of migrant waves and possibly goblin ambushes. I set my migrant cap at 30 to keep fps decent and from being swamped with migrants.

EDIT: Elves just showed up right after the eagle! look what they brought on their first trip!

I think it's more than that. Not showing up in legends means they aren't even getting placed at all. Also, making them the only playable civ causes worldgen to fail before history gets run.

UPDATE: It seems to be their cave preference that's the problem. I'm guessing they all get taken up by megabeasts before the 'bolds show up.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

So...
1) I have animal people but they don't show up in legends
2) Kobolds can't spawn because there are no free caves
But don't kobold civilizations spawn at the beginning of world gen?

My fledgling Fortress was destroyed by Kobolds. They sent an ambush of 10 markskobolds. There were no survivors.

Alright? But why am I not getting a single kobold or animal man civilization to show up in legends?
Is there a reason kobolds don't have [CAN_CIV]?

I'm pretty sure they spawn the megabeasts before they spawn the civilizations.

I think the tag just doesn't exist anymore. the animal people don't have it either.

I have one region out of six that actually has kobolds and they show up in legends as well if I recall right.
It seems like the monsters really take up all the caves before the 'bolds have any chance to get theirs.
