Molten Metal
« on: April 02, 2010, 10:11:45 pm »

We need a way to get pools of molten metal. Not magma with metal dumped into it, actual pools and pits of metal in a liquid state, possibly heated by surrounding magma. I REALLY want a moat of gold around the entrance of my fortress.

Proper liquids beyond magma and water have been discussed numerous times.

The main problem with pools of molten gold specifically is that it would harden.  Fast.
Though we do need it for proper mercury...
And lakes of booze would be completely dwarfy.

Seas of blood.

Blood, Booze, Poison, Milk, but molten metals wouldn't be viable I think... unless you could, say, line the moat with magma... to keep it heated... that'd be cool.

If it's cool how does it stay molten?

He would've said it was hot but he doesn't like magma that way. :-\

edit: ...Remind me why I'm allowing myself to post so late?

Anyway, I suppose a lining of magma would work... but then why not just use the magma to stop the invaders?

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Because magma doesn't give you free statues when you drain the pool after something falls in.

Look at it this way. Humans bronze their baby booties. Dwarves would bronze themselves/goblins/elves/their food/cats. So we would need lakes of molten bronze to do that.

Heck, even if it required something convoluted like a floor of steel with the magma under it heating the tin above.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

Besides, gold-plated goblin.
I did not consider this possibility...

Who needs a craftsdwarf capable of carving a replica of a fallen warrior when you can just stitch him/her back together as much as possible and dunk him/her in a pool of gold? A tomb AND a memorial!
