Island Worlds - Now All We Need Are Boats

I am currently drooling over my exceedingly pretty map of my large island world I have created. There's a main continent, which is all colonised and stuff, and quite a few islands dotted around and only one has a civ on (a lonely goblin one)

 My question is - we're gonna need a way to cross all that water and explore the numerous wild lands yonder. How? I wonder if it's possible to build an adventurer-usable boat in Fortress Mode... I doubt it though!

Pull yourself together man! YOUR A DWARF! Haven't you seen the newly discovered tunnel system? We can just go UNDER the ocean. Boats are for elves.

One wonders. To dig a tunnel under the ocean, how big an embark zone would you need? 1x500?

That remains relative to how close the two land masses are together.

Anyways, I noticed that there was no setting for desired tiles in large good and evil areas on the island world creation setup.  So, I set it to 2424 desired for the large areas (The desired for small and medium were 24 and 244 respectively).  Now every single ocean on the map is evil.  Fun!  ;D

I was just looking at the elevation embark maps in the middle of the ocean, and was pretty impressed by everything down there.  There seem to be mountains and trenches going across the oceans, though it does seem to eventually level off when it reaches some maximum depth.
