Stay Inside?
« on: April 02, 2010, 02:57:39 pm »

I find no orders to have all dwarves stay inside. COMPLETELY GONE. I need to figure out how to do this ASAP as I'm in my second year, have no military, and a GIANTESS has come!

From what I can tell, you have to set an Alert via the military screen, linked to the  Burrow you want everyone in.  For example, you can lay a burrow all around your city, so everyone will go about their business except when said business would take them outside.. or you could lay a burrow down on the meeting hall, so they'll all go retreat there to be slaughtered wholesale by goblins...
Once the area you want to use for "stay inside" is created, you go to military-alerts and create an "Indoors" alert, linked to the burrow [hit right twice, select your indoors burrow]
And then you go back to your "Indoors" alert and hit enter, so it'll be Indoors [CIV].  That means the civilians are now limited to that burrow.

When you want to go back to normal, set [CIV] to standard Inactive, and they'll return to their business.

well, it is better at overriding their tendencies to run out and grab +pig tail sock+ and you can make sure they stay deep in the fortress while your military dwarves go exactly where you tell them to and STAY there as long as necessary. So yes, it is more complicated but infinitely more versatile and will work to make your dwarves stay away from dangerous areas even in the outdoors.

Its not hard to make lazy burros. Right click in top left, hit enter, right click bototm left, hit enter. Repeat for a bunch of Z-levels what your fortress occupies and you're set...  at least, thats what I've done so far.

you can make burrows with a 3d designation, just change levels after starting the first corner.

And yes, I can still see the use in a simple stay underground. Gets people moving.
