Do dwarves travel any faster on roads, or smoothed rock, or anything like that?
Nope just there to look pretty.  When it comes to room value calculations smoothed stone is more valuable than raw stone, and you need a certain value in roads to get a king.  That's bout it.

(sorry for spamming questions:))

Is this how engraving works?

The base value of the material (30 for gold, 3 for obsidian, 2 for flux, 1 for regular stones etc?) is multiplied by the quality of the engraving - say x12 for a masterpiece?

How does smoothing increase the value?

Don't be sorry, it's what this post is here for after all. :P

I'm fairly certain that it works somewhat similar to that.
Smoothing has no quality levels, so it either multiplies a wall/floors value by a flat number (so x2 for everything for example), or adds a flat number to each value (plus it is required to engrave so anyways). I'm not really sure which of those it is or if the new value is the one multiplied by the engraving multiplier vs the original value.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

smoothing multiplies by a flat number, engraving by, I think 2, 3, 4 or 5
good, well, exceeding, masterfully, I think

Got a question myself: I've never actually tried melting down invaders' crap.  I've got 12 large steel daggers lying around (and I think actually stockpiled now somehow) from thieves, and I want to melt them down.

I marked them for melting in the stocks menu, but nothing ever seems to happen to them... they aren't forbidden.  Any ideas?

Also, is there anything that I can / should do with clothes left over from dead thieves?  Should I dump them in magma to destroy them and help save FPS, trade them away, or something else?

There's a command at the smelter to "melt metal items" or somesuch. That command then looks for anything marked to be melted and does so. So you need to mark + set the smelter to do it.

Is the only way to force your dwarfs to use a specific item (a masterpiece bed, say), to forbid everything, unforbid the right item, then place it?

Oh wow I wish I'd known that! The perfectionist in me thanks you very, very much. Time to make every dwarf sleep on a masterpiece bed etc :D

Oh, what about equipping folks? Any way to force masterpiece+ on them, or should I just melt down everything that isn't?

Dwarves will equip the item of highest value that fits their assigned equipment.
So unless you've been decorating some wooden breasplates with gems and gold, they should equip the highest quality stuff.

That was it, thanks.  I feel kind of silly now.  Time to start cleaning up after my attackers for once...

Is there a way to quickly jump the screen between two places? So I could, say, toggle between my fort near the surface, and my magma forges deep below?

I believe the hotkeys menu is accessed by [h].
Know that [F1] is always bound to your wagon/ground level at embark.

Could someone explain exactly how bridges work? I read the wiki but just don't get it :(

eg. my entrance looks like
xxxxxxDDDDD
BBBBBDDDDD
xxxxxxDDDDD

B=bridge,D=depot,x=clay or dirt or something

In this scenario what would
Retract do?
Raise <-?
Raise ->?
Raise ^?
Raise down, whatever symbol that was?
