Well from the stocks screen, you can see that certain types of bolt are either partially or completely forbidden. You can completely forbid, then unforbid them. The stocks screen is also necessary to find individual unstacked bolts and label them for melting.

Two little questions: would shell from a FB have the exact same protective qualities as cheap oyster shell? And is there any reason why the kitchens would stop rendering fat? I have big puddles of unspoiled fat lying around on a stockpile that haven't been used for rendering yet and the kitchen outright refuses to process them into tallow, including some FB fat (I want FB soap very badly).

dunno about fb shells but the fat lying around could be because they have no barrels to store it in

even if you do have empty barrels, they might be reserved and i dont know if the reservation includes kitchens or if its intended for stills only

here's a question from me - my baron just became a count (on a test save, i hate nobles and normally never get them but i said wth, lets see what happens) and he was miserable because he had no stuff (and i did try to kill him 3 times). so now he tantrumed (spoiled asshole) and he killed some guy in the dining room with his pick. thats was it. i want to get rid of him but i'm curious if another count will get appointed, or if i lose my nobility entirely until next year when the next caravan comes along and a new baron gets appointed.

FB shell has properties no superior to any other kind of shell.

Only if it's rotten, forbidden, or in a burrow that your cook can't reach.  You don't even need barrels to put it in - it should be rendered into tallow automatically even if there's no place to put it.

What is the message you get when you tell the kitchens to make tallow?

You will never get another baron if this one dies.  It's a one time offer only.

That's a damn shame. I hope that changes someday.

'Needs unrotten MAT-GLOB item.' The 'render fat' option is red anyway, it simply won't let me process it. Maybe the fat is rotten and glitching out, not showing the correct title? I didn't see any miasma, unless fat spoils without miasma.

My Noble is completely nude other than a battle axe. He's been running around like that for over a year. I have plenty of spare clothing lying around. Why won't he get more? He used to be in a military squad so he was armored. Also, many other of my Dwarves are running around with x or xx or missing clothing items when they can be replaced.

Yes.  You get the offer till you accept.  Then you never get it again.

Why can we not pump animals/humanoids/etc? This would be an awesome way to instantly liquefy things into your very own fountain/waterfall of blood! Although you'd have to add something so that it didn't congeal and evaporate...

I had a siege during a dwarven caravan. Seems to happen quite often. The previous one killed my liason. Why do they walk around w/o escort? Not that it would have mattered...

Anyway... the merchants from this caravan (as opposed to being slaughtered) ran into the warren and were protected. They're still in there though and I don't know why. Is there some way to get them out? They arrived in late autumn and it's spring now and they don't appear to be going anywhere.

Also, one of their horses became crazed. I didn't know animals could get crazy but it's cool. :P

Dwarves do not dress themselves unless they are part of a military squad.  They may claim new clothing, making it their property, and storing it in their bedrooms, but they won't ever wear it.  If you want them to be clothed, put them in a squad and give them some kind of uniform.

When I try to get my dwarves to fill a pond from a block of water on a flooded stairway, it says Urist McWaterbearer cancels fill pond: Inappropriate building.

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Yeah, it's a bug.

Well that's odd. I assume you've designated that stairway as a water source- check and see if it is still active. Check and see whether you accidentally changed the pond designation back to a pit. Make sure everything is accessible. Hope that fixes it?

Here's a question- if you designate a "civilian" uniform (pants/shirts/socks/whatever), assign a citizen, wait for him to suit up and then remove him from the squad, will he retain his clothing? If so, you could get your dwarves to dress properly by regularly cycling them through a civvie squad- a life saver for FB-plagued forts. Dunno if it works or not, current fort is too young for me to test.

Alright, so on my latest fortress, I embarked and almost instantly got attacked by an alligator.  Bit a nice bit on my woodcutter, so I assigned him all of our war dogs.

That backfired, big time.

Once I assigned him to military so he would use his axe to try to fight back the alligator, all but 1 of his poor doggies were dead.  Severely impacted his mood since he hadn't done enough happy things yet as we just embarked.

Now, after throwing a few tantrums and chopping off a tail of our wagon yak, he's been doing what I assume is crawling because of how slow it is around everywhere and not working very fast.  He got two massive jagged scars on both of his legs due to this and not having proper medical care set up, is it likely that he'll die/be a very slow worker for the rest of (what is no doubtingly going to be short) his life?
